In July I had some major surgery and spent several weeks trying to recupe. Now that a lot of my strength has started to return I found (what I think) a wonderful Zumba youtube video that just flat out works for me! I've been doing it every morning now for several weeks and have now progressed to her 2nd video and am looking forward to going on further :-) I've managed to lose about 9# but have definitely lost inches! Just wanted to share with ya's LOL I don't have to get up, get dressed and go someplace to exercise. I can do it in my pj's or "commando" if I want :-)

Hopefully this link will work...

Thought I would take a look and see if I could do this, but, with all the jumping, I can't do it. :(

I am not to jump, run or anything like that, so this just wouldn't work for me.

I sure would do it if I could though. :) So, any of you out there who can do it, go for it. :)

I don't jump ... I raise my legs high. I don't run, I step as fast as I can. :-)

My 65 year old neighbor got really excited about it and was doing it regularly .

If it is what you need go for it ... if it will not be too hard on that incision/surgery!

Got the "all clear" some time ago to resume my normal life, and let my body tell me if something was too much. This works, and as noted in another post...I don't jump or run :-) Rooms are too small etc. I step high and/or raise my knees as high as I can...which is getting better for this over 65 lady :-)

ok, it sounds like you found an advanced zumba video. Beginning zumba is very gentle, smooth movements and you do not jump at all. It is actually little more than getting used to rhythms of the music and very light, small steps and movements back and forth or front and back , etc. I have a really dear friend who showed me how zumba progresses. She works hard in IT tech work, has her own business , but got into Zumba a few years back and learned it from the start, properly, and is a national level qualified instructor and goes to the legit conferences for it, so she is well schooled. I actually liked the beginning zumba , and I think you need to keep looking or look for a sanctioned book and dvd system. So called aerobics of the 80s were more jumping and jarring too than they liked to admit.

I could ask her what she would recommend for private home use if any of you would like.

I re-watched the video...and I really don't see any "real" jumping (as I would call it) or running. Lots of stretching, yep. Some turns, yep. The only part I alter are the turns, since my burber carpet isn't friendly to it :-) So I just do the same step "in place". I was very active before the surgery and did lots of dancing, hiking, bike riding, canoeing etc., so this particular video is quite qppropriate for me. My GYN said my abdominal muscles were very strong even before I started zumba exercise. Just wanted to share what was going on with me :-)

  • 2 weeks later...

Found a stepping exercise that is REALLY good! I tried it this morning after my Zumba (again, only the first session) and I'm thinking the step basic will work even better than the Zumba for an all out workout. Huff and puff and muscle me body! LOL Got about 9 more pounds to lose and then it will be MAINTAIN...:-) It's a county based fitness program...

This is called beginners............

Congratulations on your fitness WE2!!

I watched this one before I chose my preferences...based on what I felt my body could do, based on my response to the instructor (which for me is vital!) and finally, the length of it's sessions. If I'm not "in tune" with the instructor I know I won't stick with it.

one thing, if you have balance issues you can slow it down and just not doing any of the jumping from one to another of your feet and such, just tone it down to what you can manage. Nobody is looking at you anyway if you are doing it at home. Eventually you can do more, this works flexibility issues well , as I can see it progress too...... sometimes you just walk through some part and repeat it til you get it.. you are training your brain in a new concept as well... it's not just about muscles and agility on a physical level.

I like the step better than the Zumba I too have knee problems

but that was all done in 18 minutes..... maybe do some all day long to start with?

To me that's the beauty of it being "online" ... you can pause it for awhile (not sure how long though) or just save it to your desktop (as I have done) and go back to wherever you want to :-) I also have some balance challenges and I have a "balance" wheel that looks at me with a grin and dares me. MrWE2 does fine on it, but I have to hold his hand to just get on the silly thing :-( It's only about an inch off the floor but ... it will just have to wait. Right now I do like the step instructor says for beginners...watch your step board and keep your hands on your hips...and I don't worry about keeping up :-)
