Is everyone all right that were in the storms?

I just talked to Louis; he said that 2 funnel clouds threatened his area in north Mississippi, but did not touch down. However, a nearby town, Smithville, was just about destroyed. 14 people were killed there. We had a scary night here; lost power about 5:30 yesterday evening. We get our power from the TVA's Brown's Ferry nuclear plant in northern Alabama, which was shut down about that time. We had torrential rains (something like you'd see in a tropical storm or hurricane) and winds that I thought would blow down some trees. Without our outdoor security light, it was absolutely pitch black last night. There were tornadoes all around us, in Trenton and Ringgold Ga and Huntsville AL all of which are within about 50 miles (or closer) of us. Manchester, where I work, had some damage and flooding.

All in all, we were very fortunate, but my heart and prayers go out to those less so. This was awful and I understand from the weather service (NOAA) that it isn't over yet.

At about 4:30 yesterday morning one went down my youndest DDs road, up-rooted trees and tore up a few houses but didn't get them. Her, her DH and 3 kids are staying with us because they have no power. The big tornado you will see on weather channel and youtube that hit Tuscaloosa, AL got my oldest DDs house. We watched it on TV and I called her and told her it was coming. Her and her DH crammed in a very small closet with 2 dogs but by the grace of god they are fine! They are staying with her mother-in-law. I have never been so scared! I called and told her it was coming, she looked out the back door and there it was. We got cut off. The whole time I'm watching it on tv because of the skycam in town. All we could do was pray. About 20 mins. later she sent a text to my youngest DD that they got hit. My youngest DD called her and they were unhurt. They went back into where the house is today to get what they could because people are looting. It was a nightmare.

Oh Kelly, how frightening!

Found out one of my aunts (mid MS) looked out her back door as one was barreling down on her, but she "got out in time" according to another aunt. I have yet to get the story from aunt Faith herself. Last yr her oldest daughter was nearly killed in one that hit OK. I grew up hearing how much I look like great aunt Doll, who was killed in a tornado with great uncle Jim.

My next home is definitely going to have a storm cellar!

We were lucky. We got a lot of rain and wind and rain and wind and rain and wind. I think we got a total of 10" in 2 1/2 days. Or more, our pond went up at least 18". The tornado prone storms went north and south of us. Lots of flooding and trees down. But no big loss of property or life in our part of North MIssissippi.

BTW if anyone is into gambling. Forget about North MIssissippi for a few weeks. The casinos are closing this weekend and they figure they will be closed for around 3 weeks because of the Mississippi River flooding.

Sympathy and well wishes to anyone in that area and their families.

Sheeesh, Kelly! I can just imagine if that were my DDs. About the longest 20 min. of your life...until you heard they were OK.

I agree with CGA.....storm cellars had better come back into style, for pete's sake! How many might have been safer?

MtRider [Yick...do NOT like wind! Toooo many nights in our nasty limestone walled/dirt floor basement riding out bad weather as a child. ]

I'm just now seeing this thread. It was a crazy time right after the storms. Internet and cell phones were flooded and/or unreliable.

Just yesterday, they posted a map of the counties that were so hard hit and right in the midst of all of it was our county. Some commentators pointed out with amazement that it was as if the tornado just hopped over our county.

We were huddled in the basement as three headed towards us from different directions, all due to hit right on top of us in five minute increments. It seemed as if being hit were inevitable.

I thought of so many people scrambling around to 'get ready' and was thankful that we didn't have to do so. We had spent the afternoon making sure everything was in place for the chickens and goats, etc...

On the other hand, I was starkly reminded that even the best of preps wouldn't have mattered if they had all been wiped out by a tornado. This made me think of one of my stories in the Fireside Forum. This is one of the reasons that I am a great advocate of diversity with the location of the locations of my preps, monies, weapons, etc... Like the old saying goes...don't have all of your eggs in one basket!! :)

In the mean time, so much loss and devastation all around us, it is very sombering, to say the least. Many people that we know have lost homes, family members and had their lives turned upside down.

I can say this, in closing, I'm more convinced than ever that there is no prep more important than being SPIRITUALLY prepared. Because, in the end, when disaster falls upon us....that's what will keep up moving, functioning, caring and doing what will be required of us at such a time!!
