TF and sickness

I recently realized that the amount of sickness in our family has gone down the more TF we eat. DS2 usually catches illnesses as they come around. With his viral-induced asthma, he's ended up in the hospital 4 separate times for overnight stays, with his last two visits requiring oxygen for around 16 hours each time. Even with confirmed H1N1 cases in both his class and my other kids' school, the most he's had is a small cough and runny nose. We've been on top of making sure he is getting his Flovent and Albuterol, but that is no different from last winter. I truly owe this to eating TF, and we are not even doing it religiously. Here's what we've been doing:

Daily CLO, kefir, D3. We eat real sourdough breads. I soak beans for at least 24 hours, usually until they just begin to sprout. Pastured/free-range/grass fed meats and poultry. Lots of milk (I wish it was raw, but I'm settling for non-homogenized, local grass-fed). 24 hour bone broths. As much organic as I can afford. We cut way back on sugar, using sucunat when needed. Trying to eat more organ meats...mostly liver. (pate, liverwurst, etc.) Lots of popcorn popped in a little olive oil and lots of coconut oil, topped with pastured spring butter. Soaked oatmeal/rice/grains. Lots of good animal fats (saturated), but it must be from pastured/grass fed/free-range animals. NO trans-fats or most veggie oils, especially canola. (only olive and coconut, for the most part. Although, I'd love to try some palm oil). I know there's more, but I can't think of it, atm.

If someone does start to get sick, I give them a few drops of grapefruit seed extract in a little orange juice. It usually does the trick. I also make sure to up the amount of D3, C and bone broth.

I'd love to hear if any other TF'ers are staying healthy this season, and what are you doing to stay healthy.

I eat pretty much the way you do Grace and Violets, except lower carb.

I have noticed a huge difference in my health. I never get colds and flu anymore. When someone exposes me to a cold, I can feel very mild symptoms that my body is able to fight off quickly. It used to take me weeks to get over one and I would be so sick.

I don't worry about being around sick people anymore. No hand sanitizer for me. When I was working, I was in a metal building without heating. It got cold enough that the pipes froze twice. All winter, my co-workers were sick, but I wasn't...never missed a day!

I did have one cold since I started eating this way. I was painting my bedroom and bathroom and I guess breathing in the fumes all day and night triggered it. That's when I decided to start using safer products in my house.

It does cost a little more to eat this way, but we've saved so much money by not missing work. When my husband takes a day off, it's for fun, not because he's sick. We use absolutely no medications now. That includes over the counter. We never need to go to the doctor and have had no cavities since switching.

We are saving so much money and feel great!! I would love to help others change their lives this way.

What is TF?

TF = Traditional Foods, it's what Nourishing Traditions is all about. Take a look at some of the other threads under Nourishing Traditions for more about it. I think it's definitely the way to eat, if you are prepping. You can use most "regular" prep foods, like wheat berries, whole grains, beans, etc. and prepare them in such a way that it helps your body absorb the highest amount of nutrients. It also includes ways of preserving foods, like fermenting vegetables, dairy, etc.

Homemaker - My teeth were not great when I started eating this way. I've read some about actually healing your teeth, including reversing cavities, by eating TF. Especially making sure to include LOTS of spring, pastured butter. They even sell high-vitamin Butter Oil, which is super-condensed butter, that gives you the most nutrients from the butter. I've not had any of this, but I've heard wonderful things. http://www.greenpasture.org/retail/?t=prod...mp;i=butter-oil

I have a tooth with decay in it. I haven't had it filled because it is in remission. As long as I stay away from processed foods it's fine. The body has a tremendous ability to heal itself if we give it the nourishment to do so. The decay spot will never be white again, but it will harden over and stop hurting.

Whenever I indulge too much, Like right now, it starts hurting a little. It's my body's way of telling me that even a little deviation from an optimal diet has an effect on my health. When my husband indulges, his first symptom is bad breath. He can't hide his sins from me!! I know when he's had a Mountain Dew!

I have tried the butter oil. I couldn't tell if it helped any.
