Miss me???

Heh - Yeah, right... :coffeescreen:

Our electricity went off for just about an hour around noon on Tuesday.

We were having a wet, nasty storm that dumped ice all over the trees and power lines. We have a tremendous bunch of smaller branches down, and some larger ones that we're grateful didn't hit anything like the house or car. DH heard a couple of the larger branches fall close to the house.

Then at 5 PM, the power went out again, and this time it didn't come back on. Some electrical poles were hit by sliding vehicles, some collapsed from ice buildup, and some wires were broken by falling trees and branches. Two local power companies had to call in LOTS of help from other areas. Hubby was detoured 3 times to avoid downed lines just coming home from work.

We had no power for over 2 days. :( Almost 34 hours total.

I ended up helping BigDD by babysitting yesterday for a while, so I got online for a very little bit there, but I didn't have much time.

DH ran the generator when he was home, but mostly it was to keep the refrigerator & freezer going.

Luckily, DH had pulled the generator out recently to test-run it. You must run them occasionally. He found a slight problem and had fixed it. So things went fairly smoothly.

Still, not "fun". LilDD is still home on break from college, and while she was patient, it wasn't *great* for her.

I am grateful to have an older stove that needs no electricity at all to work - propane works well for us. And the kerosene heater worked well.

One thing we will be getting soon is a Carbon Monoxide detector, for safety. It's been on DH's list, but he hasn't gotten one yet. I think we can afford one now.

Power outages are relatively rare for us, but when they are this widespread, our area isn't a priority. Out in the country there are too few of us. The cities come first.

And we'll be exploring the woods sometimes soon. DH heard one BIG tree fall down yesterday before the power came back. We don't know if it was on our land or the neighbor's... :o

Always lessons to be learned from unexpected occurrences...

Yep, those carbon monoxide detectors are available at hardware stores, wallyworld and even the local drug store in house repair /stuff aisle if it has one, usually.

Sorry that the power went out and ice storms are worse than anything else for actual winter conditions.

I didn't lose power but we do have some bigger limbs down.
My brother and son's girlfriend were without power for a few days. Girlfriend's family borrowed the generator. Cat, I was wondering if you or your oldest had power. Son's girlfriend lives near your dd.

You did well because you were prepared.

Any idea of people around you were less off?

Perhaps if so, an idea to both keep score of dangers and gently introduce independency to some.

Well done for all keeping your cool there.

Our DD was surprised we were without power, gofish- they were just fine.

I suspect that most of us out in the country are prepared. Stuff happens out here.

The ones in the city & suburbs are the ones who head to the hotels & motels because they can't do without their comforts. :(
