Need eye wash recipe

Recommended Posts

DH and big pup were forging a trail thru our scrub willows today. A branch snapped into DH's eye...the very corner by nose. Ow! Anyone have a nice soothing eyewash remedy? Red and sore. Hoping sleep will help sooth it too.

Thanks! We rushed around this morning to prep for vastly colder weather and mebbe snow. I forgot to ask him how it felt. Sheeeesh! I'll talk to him later [he's at office] and give him suggestions.

Yesterday he used our eye cup and just our regular water. He didn't feel like anything was in it, only very irritated. I was concerned about the straight water without some saline content like we have naturally. More soothing to match the fluids better. Never heard of B. soda too.

As for doctor....he's in town today so if it really gets to be a problem, he can slip over somewhere and have it checked. Thanks to both of you. Eyes aren't something we'd want to fool with.

This is something we all need to know and have in our preps. Here's some info I found:

http://www.ehow.com/how_7802800_make-eye-wash-solution.html

Instructions
    • 1

Pour 2 cups of distilled water into the pot.

    • 2

Bring the water to a boil. Add 1/2 tsp. of salt, and stir to dissolve it.

    • 3

Remove from the heat and allow to cool completely before using. This solution may be used for up to two days before it should be discarded.

I need to get some more distilled water. I tossed mine after my last bout of sinus congestion and neti pot fun!

I was thinking the same, Andrea. We have no distilled water. But we are not on city water with any additives. Who knows what well water in the west has tho.... Told him about the 1/2 teaspoon salt per qt/liter of water. Pinch of B. soda? Is that for ph, CGA?

DH said his other eye was sore by tonite. He's been compensating. Injured eye feels ok today but not great.

Told him to stop sticking sticks in his eye.... Ow!

On same site as Andrea found:

Instructions
    • 1

Sterilize the eye cup or eye dropper by leaving it in boiling water for 10 minutes. Boil a pint of water for 10 minutes.

    • 2

Mix 1/8 tsp. of boric acid into 1 cup sterilized water. Allow the water to cool.

    • 3

Strain the mixture through a coffee filter, gauze or cheesecloth.

    • 4

If using an eye cup, fill the cup and lower your eye onto it. Blink and roll your eye around for one minute. If your eye isn't submerged, standing over a sink, tuck a towel around your neck, hold the cup firmly to your eye and tip your head back carefully so that your eye is completely covered. Roll your eye and blink for one minute.

    • 5

If using an eyedropper, squeeze the rubber bulb on the top of the dropper. Then dip the open end into the eye wash. Release the top so the stopper fills. Tip your head back and squeeze the bulb to release the fluid. Repeat several times.

    • 6

Repeat up to three times a day. Use fresh solution and sterilize your tools each time.

We used to use boric acid wash for kittens with matted eyes.....long long ago. Is that still current? Don't have any boric acid either tho.

They are using 'sterile water' ...boiled for 10 minutes. As good as distilled or no. I realize distilled is not the same as sterilized.

BTW....eye cups are WONDERFUL for getting something out of your eye like a particle or eye lash. [not for imbedded stuff, of course. Here are some pics.

Where does one buy boric acid? Do places like WM carry it? My mom used to make a solution with it when I was little for my eyes.

Amazon has it. I got mine at Lowes or Home Depot I don't remember which. I got mine to use as an insecticide for centipedes. Shudder

I assume it's the same stuff?

I was highly amused and amazed when I went to Wal-Mart looking for boric acid to make eye wash, last summer. I asked the pharmacist behind the counter, and she said "Boric ACID? What is it used for?" I told her, for making eye wash. She replied in alarm, "You should NOT be putting acid in your eyes, you could go blind!" So I asked if they had any pre-made eye wash, and she directed me to the contact lens washes, which are NOT the same thing at all.

It made me wonder if she slept the day they covered that in pharmacy class, or have discontinued compounding their own formulas for such simple things.

I left shaking my head in wonderment, and got the boric acid from Walgreens. We make human as well as canine eye wash for ourselves.

Last week I asked for a garment bag at Wal-Mart. I had to explain the concept. She looked at me like I was the smartest person in the world to have come up with that idea.
