drumrunner
Found this a little while ago, Apr 30th US HHS Approves Emergency H7N9 DiagnosticsRecombinomics Commentary 21:15April 30, 2013 On April 19, 2013, the Secretary determined that there is a significant potential for a public health emergency that has a significant potential to affect national security or the health and security of United States citizens living abroad and that involves the avian influenza A (H7N9) virus. The above comments are from the US Health and Human Service (HHS)notice entitled “Determination and Declaration Regarding Emergency Use of in Vitro Diagnostics for Detection of the Avian Influenza A (H7N9) Virus”. The notice allows use of an unapproved diagnostic test for the detection of H7N9 bird flu.Although WHO has cited a lack of evidence for efficient human to human transmission of H7N9, the sequence data provides compelling evidence forsustained transmission in Jiangsu Province (see map), which is further supported by the export of H7N9 from Jiangsu Province to Taiwan via a traveler using a commercial airline. The export of H7N9 suggests the levels of H7N9 infections are markedly higher than the lab confirmed cases, which relies on an insensitive assay which has produced an alarming number of false negatives, when samples from the upper respiratory tract are used. The emergency notice by the US HHS provides addition evidence for efficient human H7N9 transmission, WHO denials notwithstanding. Andrea
There is a pretty comprehensive thread on this latest flu outbreak here: http://thisbluemarble.com/showthread.php?t=52353 I've been following this closely myself and I believe there is definitely cause for concern here. Quote Link to comment
Jeepers
My ears perk up when I hear about this new-er strain of flu too. I honestly believe that sooner or later one of these strains of flu is going to get us. It seems like it just keeps building strength with each new stage of development. I have a small spare bedroom here and I keep most of my 'sick room' supplies in there. I keep them in a couple of plastic storage boxes stowed out of the way in the closet. If any one is contagious with anything...that's where I'm making them stay. Including me! The main problem with the room right now is it still has carpet on the floor. I'd like to lay down a wooden type floor in there. Even the cheaper laminate would be better than carpet. It's a small room so it wouldn't cost much and I could probably do it myself with the tongue and groove boards. I'd really like tile but I have to think of resale value and that would detract even more from the value of the place. Quote Link to comment
