Cat
This weekend we take our youngest child to a university 2 hours away. This child was my answered prayer, my joy after the sorrow of two miscarriages, my delightfully funny burst of sunshine in difficult times. As happy as I am that she has this opportunity, my heart grieves for the loss of her everyday company. These last few years have been a blessing. With one daughter married with children, our son living nearby but in his own home, we have grown closer. She seems to appreciate more than she criticizes. It's more difficult because she's my youngest, and she'll be further away than the other two. They were minutes away, not hours. And yes, I know it could be worse; she's not halfway across the country. I seem to get all "weepy" at random times. It's with me constantly. Friday we are trying to wrap up the preps and be ready to take her on Saturday, so I won't be here much these next few days. Quote Link to comment
SueC
awww - she will survive and grow and you will discover the beautiful young lady that you have created. from a mother who has seen 4 daughters leave home, the last one is 11 hours drive from home and intends to move to the other end of the country next year to a city I don't think I could ever visit as it is just too hot for me. Love them lots pray lots and enjoy some time with just 2 of you at home Edited August 15, 2014 by SueC Quote Link to comment
Daylily
I understand! I felt the same way when our oldest daughter married and moved away. We went back to northern Maine to work that summer (she got married in April, we left a couple of weeks later). She and DSIL lived in TN. We didn't have cell phones then. I cried a lot. Simplegirl
I remember when we took DD to college last year. I felt a sense of relief along with the pain of leaving her because I knew she was making a good choice for HER. Not enough kids she went to school with have made the commitment to college and are now either pregnant and unmarried or working at part time jobs and still living at home. You will be okay. You will talk or text regularly I am sure. I text with my DD daily even if it is only about little things. Keeps us connected and we both know I would be there in a heartbeat if she needs me. As will you. Hang in there. It gets easier. Quote Link to comment
dogmom4
(((Hugs))) we are fortunate that we have so much technology to keep in touch...cell phones, email, Skype. Quote Link to comment
Mt_Rider
I was just thinking that, Dogmom. Was NOT the case when DD1 went to different island for university. Then when DD2 joined her, we left for CO! Does anyone but us who still live in 'the boonies' [aka: outside cell phone range] even REMEMBER the term "long-distance phone call" ?? Still affects my ability of contact DDs. But truly Cat, I'll pray for your empty nest feelings. The first one and the last one really change things. MtRider Quote Link to comment
Twilight
I can not say it exactly gets easier..... my one and only left home 12 years ago... Busy , she calls me infrequently.......... Quote Link to comment
sassenach
I bet she comes home for Thanksgiving break! Best wishes in this. She has to spread her wings too. You will work it out how to communicate with her over the distance involved. Quote Link to comment
Becca_Anne
((((Cat))) My son left for college (first one to leave the nest) last fall and it has been bittersweet. I still miss him terribly but I know he is spreading his wings and learning to fly. He has been home only twice for Thanksgiving and Christmas and we kidnapped him for our summer vacation for a few days in the middle of summer term (he chose to do the extra term to shorten his college time to 4 yrs with a computer science minor intstead of taking a 5th yr). I am sure it will be tough to drop her off but phones help! Quote Link to comment
Momo
Poor Cat..it sounds like the empty nest syndrome is hitting you now. Your life is taking a whole new direction. Life is just one change after another. Quote Link to comment
out_of_the_ordinary
I teared up at packing away a tote of baby clothes, newborn to 3 month size, last week. I don't want to think about where you're at! Quote Link to comment
pjadams
I'm there with you! My oldest joined the Catholic church and decided to become a nun (all in the last 2 years). We went from having her at home full time to...just completely gone. She's in Wisconsin staying near and working at the convent where she hopes to be accepted. I had just started adjusting well, and she said she's coming home (next week) for a very short visit. I'm hoping this balance I've reached will hold after she leaves again. It's tough.
