Fraud problems

Recommended Posts

I don't remember if I posted this or not but...Several months ago I was checking my bank account on-line and saw that I had money missing. I went to the bank and they stopped my card, issued another one & said they would check into it. About two days later my bank account was emptied using my wife's card. We went back to the bank & they checked & said I tried to buy plane tickets to Turkey.

They stopped everything (and the airline declined it) and got another new card. I got all of my money back. Everything has been good until yesterday.

I got a call from American Express asking me to call them. I could not understand the person taking because he talked too fast. I went on-line & got their contact number & called this morning. After proving who I was over the phone they said I applied for a card last month.

NO I DIDN'T!!!

They made an entry about the problem & assured me I was not liable for any charges. They also said they would send me a letter in the mail within 30 days about the problem.

I also had to call my bank, and all 3 credit reporting companies to put a fraud alert on my name.

Why can't people stop being thieves? Oh, and of course there is no way anyone knows who did this.

If I could have 3 seconds alone with this person(s), they would not be able to do it again, I promise.

Lesson to be learned from all of this? Check your accounts everyday & if you get a phone call about your credit, check into it.

That is so frustrating!

I am a church treasurer and our church debit card was hacked in May. When I went online to do something, the church account showed over $1300.00 of purchases at Sony PlayStation. I immediately canceled the card and called this company. They said they couldn't do anything without my Sony PlayStation account number! I told them I didn't have an account. So I called the bank fraud department and they said we would get the money back while they investigated.

I really would like to know how they get the card numbers. I have a card that is used only for online purchases & no money is left in that account. It is rare that we use our cards for anything.

I have had my number changed twice due to fraud on my credit card. It didn't affect my banking or anything else but I did have to cancel the cards and get a new one. One time it was being used in Australia which they caught pretty quick and the other time they tried to buy something but didn't know the zip code so it was stopped. I am so careful about that stuff that DH teases me and yet they still got my number. I suspect an inside job since it was the same company both times. I can only imagine what damage could have been done if it wasn't caught early.

I hope you have nipped yours in the bud, WormGuy!

I really hate a thief and a liar. I'm sorry that happened to you. It really messes with your mind and probably your health. When it's happened to me, I get all flustered and upset. Even though I know I'll get the money back and things will get cleared up, for those few hours I'm a wreck hoping the credit card company believes me. And when it does happen the C.C. company acts like it's no big deal because I'll get the money back.

I'd like to get my hands on them too. No wonder prices are so high...someone (you and me) is going to pay for it one way or another.

One time I was hacked from Ireland. Even charged for the currency conversion. The last time it was to a massage parlor in Akron, OH. Could have been me. It wasn't! I was surprised that card got hacked because it never leaves my house. Never. I only use it for internet purchases. I got that card for that very reason. I only have a $2,000.00 limit on it. They've offered to raise it but I told them no way. If it ever gets hacked that's 'all' they will get. Also, I don't have it tied to my bank account. I get a monthly statement and pay by check. The bank keeps trying to get me to let them pay for the cards from my checking and I won't let them. Send me the bill and I'll pay it. Nothing comes out of my accounts unless I write a check (that never leaves my house) or I go in to the bank personally. Yeah, I'm old and out of date but...

I do have one account that is for my mortgage only. It's an automatic payment but it's set up so nothing but my mortgage comes out of it. Even then, I watch the balance.

The other two cards are a different matter. I've used them everywhere and 'only' been hacked once or twice in all the time I've had them.

Off to check my accounts. Sigh.

One thing I like about my Discover card, other than the cash back rewards, is with every bill I get I get a report of my FICO score. It's just a graph with my rating but I can see if it goes up or down every month.

Y'all know that THOUSANDS of people had their data stolen from the IRS a couple years ago. Every week more mega companies are hacked. People can make copies of your cards right at the store or, in my case, the eye doctor's office.

I really doubt if anything is 'safe and secure' any more. Even sitting in a safe in your house!

These crooks must make a reallly good living at this. :frying pan:

Stores are scammed all the time. Call and talk to a lowly employee. Crooks tell employee they are the district manager [easy to get the name]. The line is that there is a huge problem with the GIFT CARDS sold by the store. Instruct employee to read off numbers on certain types of gift cards. They can get hundreds of cards in this scam. Wait a year....then call the same stores and do it again. All the alerts about this scam would have been forgotten....and/or there is a turn-over of employees.

I would too! This debit card is only used for online purchases. The assistant treasurer has one that is only used for in store purchases. It was the online on that was hacked.

I know when mine was copied the first time. I used it for my motel room and the clerk kept it longer than she should. 3 days later it was used in Illinois at Wal-Mart for over $200. My credit card company took care of it . I do not know what happened within weeks of getting a new one.
Debit cards can strip you as no ID is required. Credit cards can be stolen or compromised . And there are some places that will not take cash......

I just got this from a friend of mine. Really is heart breaking.

Don't think identity theft is that big a deal? A friend of mine had his Amazon account hacked yesterday. The thief got his credit card numbers, address, phone number, all of it.

And last night they used it to send the SWAT team to his house. SWAT shot all 3 of his dogs. 2 were killed on sight and the 3rd died at 3:30 in the am in emergency surgery.

Protect yourself by protecting your personal information.

...I'm actually pretty worried. The last I heard from him was when he announced that Sage, his prized 3 year old Boxer, died in surgery. She was like his kid.

SWATTING has become a verb.

I had a problem with one credit card February a year ago. Got it resolved, I thought. Same card, September--someone changed my address to New Jersey, changed my phone number, used the autopay feature to pay off the entire balance of the card. I closed it down, reversed the changes, and said to put a code word on my telephone authorizations. They said okay. Didn't tell me that the code word didn't get put on because it was too long. John in New Jersey kept taking the card, doing things, and I kept shutting it down. Paid it off and said close account. They said okay, but didn't shut it down because they put a few dollars of a charge on it. I called and once I finally got a supervisor--someone who said something other than that he couldn't shut down the account until I paid it off--was told ignore that, the supervisor I was talking to would nullify it. Next month, it was that charge plus a late payment fee...and another twenty-plus minutes on the phone. On about the monthly fourth call to a supervisor, I found out about the initial code word and the second code word being too long. They said there was a computer glitch that kept the account open, and kept putting monthly charges on it (mostly late fees)--and John in New Jersey or someone like him was stirring the pot too. June was the first month I did not receive a bill from them with some ugly little "surprise" in it.

Our business account got hit last month. I didn't catch it until I got the statement. Of all things it was the telephone company! After speaking to the phone co., they claimed it was not them and told me to contact the bank.

Because, the bank we are using, said, "..we normally don't dispute charges on business accounts..", we will be changing our business account to another bank.

I am not a happy camper. :animal0017:

Wormie it sounds like the account hacker for the amazon account was a serious dangerous criminal. geez.....

I am very sorry that happened and the one card that got the tickets for Turkey, that one sounds like a wannabe terrorist trying to go swear allegiance to ISis .... Turkey is a gateway to it for volunteers from UK and US .....

hope you got that cancelled.

This is seriously scary

and we can no longer pay cash so often.

Here is an update:

It started out around 2 pm Friday. He was battling with amazon customer service because they had given out his personal info to someone without performing a two step identification like they are suppose to.

A few hours later he was trying to find a go
od lawyer that deals in internet fraud and he was doing damage control, canceling credit cards and things like that.

Late that night he started freaking out that he was going to be swatted. I don't know what happened before that, maybe whoever stole his info said they were going to do it, I don't know. But he was calling the local sheriff to try stop it.

After midnight he announced that one of his dogs was dead and his other was in surgery and he was livid at this point. Nearly hysterical.

Yesterday he only came on briefly to announce that the dog in surgery died at 3:30 am...
