Can sealer

Recommended Posts

Does anyone own a can sealer or used one? I am looking at them and while they are expensive, $800.00 to 1,400.00 I am weighing the pros and cons over using buckets with mylar bags. We know a friend that is LDS and we are going to contact them about going to a cannery to see about either using their equipment versus buying our own. The cans, lids, boxes, oxygen absorbers we would like to purchase from them and some of the food based on the cost of buying local. One drawback is the closest cannery is about three hours away and we would need a truck and trailer to bring back enough cans so that we don't have to make the drive hopefully one time.

I have another friend who is into prepping and we might be able to split the cost of the machine and be able to bring back two pallets of cans which would be 896 cans. That should be enough to do everything we want to do with cans left over for future use and the cans will keep if stored in a dry area.

WormGuy, I was reading a bunch of LDS blogs and such, and something I came across may help -- in one (I will try to search for it again later, can't find it at the moment) stated that local LDS churches often invest in the canning machine, primarily those in areas far from LDS canneries. The blog stated they will loan those out, depending on the ward/stake (sorry, not being lds I didn't look in to exactly what a ward/stake is other than it being a local congregation area).

Maybe you could contact your local LDS church and see if they by chance have one you could borrow. I wish I could remember the title of the person the blog article stated that keeps the canning machine locally -- there was something about liability issues and the items not being kept on the premises but at the home of the person in charge of it.

Sorry it's not much help with not having the blog or title of the person (I will check though), but thought I'd pass the idea along in case it could be of use and save you the expense and time of traveling 3 hours each way. Again I will try to find that particular blog again for more details on it.

I saw something about that also, but it was not clear if the local churchs have the machines or if it is in just one church in a central location. Any info on this would be great. Thank you.

Still can't seem to locate that one particular (elusive!) blog, but while searching, I did recognize a couple of titles the woman on the blog mentioned....Stake Canning Specialist and the Stake Welfare Specialist (something to do with their Relief Society).

From what I do remember reading, it seemed as though some churches buy their own, while others chip in, and then the stake canning specialist keeps it in their home or garage for loaning out or usage.

When searching, I saw YouTube has some interesting videos by LDS folks on using the canners, demo on how to use it, tips and such that may be helpful.

On a side note, I wonder what type of businesses may use a similar type machine .... with the idea that they may allow usage or even have a used one for sale.
