When you cut the top end off an onion stick in soil. I have flowers from the garden in the house all winter so I just stick the onion in one of the pots of flowers, cover it lightly and in a couple of weeks I have green onions. I use enough onions in cooking that I almost always have fresh green onions growing in one pot or another.

Are you meaning that the top that you plant is at the end of the white part, where the roots grew...

I don't know if I've ever tried the root end or not. You wouldn't be out anything but a little time trying it.

Part of the white onion needs to be *with* the green bit at the top... your onion may not have much of a green sprout, but it will soon, as long as it still has some white part to grow *from*.
Kind of like how you plant potatoes, or a pineapple sprout. Ya gotta have some "food" for the thing to grow.
Or, as Westie tried to point out, just try the *root/bottom* of the onion, and see if that part works to grow green tops.
At any rate, you won't get white onions growing, but you'll have the green tops to use in cooking.

I always cut the 'top' of my onions, when I need some for cooking, then, place it back in the veggie bag, breathe a little air into the bag, twist it a little and place it, root down, in the veggie crisper in the frig. A couple of days later the center starts to sprout. If I forget about it and it sits a couple more days, it grows even more. After I have used almost all my onion, I take the root part that is growing in the frig and stick it in the ground.
So, reading about cutting the top off and planting it, I got confused too. (Tucking my blonde hair under my hat.) LOL!
