Green onions

When you cut the top end off an onion stick in soil. I have flowers from the garden in the house all winter so I just stick the onion in one of the pots of flowers, cover it lightly and in a couple of weeks I have green onions. I use enough onions in cooking that I almost always have fresh green onions growing in one pot or another.

Ok Dee...this is what you call a major BLONDE moment...
With my green onions that I plant outside down here, the green part is what grows outta the ground so I guess technically that would be the top...
OR
Are you meaning that the top that you plant is at the end of the white part, where the roots grew...

Ok, there's the root end (bottom) of the onion and the top (where the green shoots out). Cut off the top and put it in soil. Leave the top (where the green shoots out) on top and the sliced part down. Does that make more sense?
I don't know if I've ever tried the root end or not. You wouldn't be out anything but a little time trying it.

OK, one more time. The top of the onion is put in soil. After a couple of weeks the top of the onion (in the soil) is still an old top of an onion BUT the green shoots it sends up are green onion. No bulb at the bottom just the green on the top.
Snip them off and put in salads or whatever and dig the other out of the soil and throw it away.

OK, I give! I've thought since the first post you were pulling my leg BUT since I'm a mod here and there are so many new people I was being nice. I am now telling you to just forget the whole thing and buy your onions at the grocery store!

Well I do declare!
I feel an instant rejection...ROFL!
Seriously, for what ever reason, I've had a hard time understanding your simple explanation...
I think my mind is in intricate, complicated, overdrive on new information...
*sigh*
*darlene plants her own onions in her garden that have roots, white parts and green parts...*

ROFLMAO @ westie...
Raise my IQ?
Well I NEVAH!
First Dee says cut the stupid green part and stick it in the dirt.
Now westie says to cut the white part with the root and throw it on top of the dirt.
Pretty soon y'all will be trying to tell me that if I take a pound of hamburger and either plant it in the ground sideways, or throw it on top of the dirt, that I'll grow a COW!!!!!!!!!!
*rolling eyes*
ROFL!
I have come to the conclusion that y'all are nuts.
Such abuse I take around here...that's why *I* am the innocent one!

Part of the white onion needs to be *with* the green bit at the top... your onion may not have much of a green sprout, but it will soon, as long as it still has some white part to grow *from*.
Kind of like how you plant potatoes, or a pineapple sprout. Ya gotta have some "food" for the thing to grow.
Or, as Westie tried to point out, just try the *root/bottom* of the onion, and see if that part works to grow green tops.
At any rate, you won't get white onions growing, but you'll have the green tops to use in cooking.

Where words and actions disagree, the heart is revealed.
Look how often the unexpected happens... and we still don't expect it.

take a onion ,a whole onion. . .
do not peel it or cut anything from it!
put it someplace and in a few days when you need a onion -
go look for it and use that one for what you need!

I always cut the 'top' of my onions, when I need some for cooking, then, place it back in the veggie bag, breathe a little air into the bag, twist it a little and place it, root down, in the veggie crisper in the frig. A couple of days later the center starts to sprout. If I forget about it and it sits a couple more days, it grows even more. After I have used almost all my onion, I take the root part that is growing in the frig and stick it in the ground.
So, reading about cutting the top off and planting it, I got confused too. (Tucking my blonde hair under my hat.) LOL!
