[The Lounge]: Necie has entered at 7:04 am
[HSmom] 7:04 am: Good morning Necie!
[pauline] 7:26 am: from basement we have large windows in each room that is only
about 3 feet from floor level up to base of tall window and the wells all have
attached ladders in them
[pauline] 7:27 am: morning mt rider
[HSmom] 7:27 am: Today's topic we can discuss physical escape routes ... from a
home, business, etc...also from an area: neighborhood, region, etc If we have
time we can talk about escaping from situations as well.
[Mt_Rider] 7:27 am: *yawn* - Hi everybody
[Necie] 7:28 am: when we bought this house it only had one exterior door-very
dangerous-in the kitchen-the roof dd would have to access is above the kitchen.
if there were a fire in there, then there would be no way out for her from
upstairs, except a downstairs window. made dbf put a front door (off the
living/dining room) in before we moved in
[HSmom] 7:30 am: Scary Necie! Glad you took care of it!
[Necie] 7:31 am: i did daycare for 12 years also-it's amazing the things that
you just don't realize without having to be up to code
[HSmom] 7:31 am: What about your work? For those of you that work.... And this
time, what about things besides fire? Say a guy comes in and starts shooting up
the place?
[Mt_Rider] 7:31 am: We are built into side of the hill. Down under is garage.
Upper is living. Usually access from exterior stairs in front but the backdoor
is at ground level. *NOT that the ground is level...goes up a steep Mt hillside.
[HSmom] 7:32 am: After all these mall shootings, I'm jumpy... we can talk about
malls too.
[Mother] 7:32 am: I'm more concerned about escaping without being seen if my
home is being invaded.
[Mt_Rider] 7:33 am: I tend to know where the back door is in most places....not
from training...cuz I always have to find the restroom! But it's handy to know.
[pauline] 7:33 am: i agree with mother about getting out without being seen in
home
[HSmom] 7:33 am: Well lets talk about that Mother. On the one hand, you want
some clearing around your home, so you can't be ambushed. OTOH, you want some
cover so you can escape.
[Mt_Rider] 7:34 am: Going out our back windows as someone comes in the front
would be an option --- iffen we didn't meet the other guy there!
[Mother] 7:34 am: exactly. and most times the place would be surrounded but if
we have some sort of notice it would be better to have some escape route planned
in advanced
[The Lounge]: Joan has left at 7:34 am
[pauline] 7:35 am: theres not much i can do at this house for cover it is an
open floor plan and we have roads on 3 sides of us
[HSmom] 7:35 am: tunnels?
[Mt_Rider] 7:35 am: I have thot of a way to circle 'round thru cover of woods to
get to my car....and the BOB stuff in it.
[Mother] 7:35 am: a wooded hillside almost abuts the backside of our home but
there's not a lot of cover unless it would be dark
[Mother] 7:36 am: and we'd be hard pressed to get around to our vehicles without
being seen
[Mt_Rider] 7:36 am: I have dark clothes in a stack in my closet for quick change
into...
[Mt_Rider] 7:37 am: Kinda depends on if the other guys are 'woods trained' or
just a bunch of jerks.
[Mother] 7:37 am: our major escape vehicle is our motor home and the only way
out of the property is down a thousand foot drive with field on one side and
some fencerow trees and wooded hill on the other

[Mother] 7:38 am: hmmm dark clothes would be good
[Mt_Rider] 7:38 am: City-trained folks won't be looking so much to woods.
[Mt_Rider] 7:38 am: I won't ask if you can climb a tree and wait.....
[Mother] 7:39 am:
[Mother] 7:39 am: The problem is I'm not sure I can run through the woods any
longer
[HSmom] 7:40 am: That raises a good point Mother.
[Mt_Rider] 7:40 am: Amen to that on some days. Does adrenalin override any of
your 'stuff'? It does mine...to a certain extent.
[Mother] 7:40 am: if you do escape from your home then where do you go for
protection or help?
[HSmom] 7:40 am: I'll be MtRider isn't real big on running thru woods, and I
know I'm not.
[Mt_Rider] 7:40 am: That's what my horses are for....if I can get to them..
[Mother] 7:40 am: yes, it does but I pay for it dearly after which I'm sure you
do also
[pauline] 7:41 am: is there a defendable area in your home or close to it if
needed and would you be willing to shoot it out if needed
[Mt_Rider] 7:41 am: Payback is a ....hard thing.....
[HSmom] 8:08 am: Dunno.
[pauline] 8:08 am: i keep a keychain light with me mom has a small flashlight in
her purse and since 90% of the time we are somewhere we are together we should
at least have one working
[Mother] 8:08 am: that makes me hermit under the hill
[Mt_Rider] 8:08 am: lol
[Mother] 8:09 am: what about after you get OUT of a place
[HSmom] 8:09 am: I need to ventilate a bit about my work....
[Mother] 8:09 am: whats the best strategy
[pauline] 8:10 am: it would depend i think on what type they are if they are
rechargeable plug ins they might not but the battery eaters, and hand crank
should i think

[Mt_Rider] 8:10 am: Also another time to consider a hidey hole.....risky and
hard to stay put...but sometimes a better option depending on the situation.
[Mother] 8:10 am: k go vent HS
[HSmom] 8:10 am: I am an RN, so technically escaping is considered 'patient
abadonment' which could cost my license.
[HSmom] 8:11 am: My unit, since it's a NICU, is locked. Don't want any babies
stolen...but....
[Mt_Rider] 8:11 am: Grab a patient or two and get out.???
[Mother] 8:11 am: and I would think they WOULD need to be saved too
[HSmom] 8:11 am: there is no security. The front desk is a secretary.
[pauline] 8:12 am: yep you are stuck in a bad situation there , and most of the
little ones can't really just be grabbed and moved there either
[Mt_Rider] 8:12 am: what's NICU?
[HSmom] 8:12 am: The actually hospital security are COMPLETELY unarmed.
[Mother] 8:12 am: what scenes do you anticipate having to escape from
[pauline] 8:12 am: newborn intensive care unit
[Mother] 8:12 am: natal intensive care unit
[HSmom] 8:12 am: NICU = Neonatal Intensive Care Unit
[Mother] 8:12 am: hard to remove them I bet'
[Mt_Rider] 8:12 am: ooooh, can't just grab then
[Mother] 8:13 am: most on tubes and such?
[HSmom] 8:13 am: They're usually hooked up to stuff. In our organized evac
plans, we would pile a few babies and a portable oxygen in a crib and roll them
out. That won't work if they're on a ventilator, but it's a start.
[HSmom] 8:13 am: I think the scene that plays on my mind is the crazy dad.
[pauline] 8:14 am: if at work the best bet sounds like pray real hard , not
being mean or snide but
[Mt_Rider] 8:14 am: In fire tho, what is the protocols?
[pauline] 8:14 am: there isn't much more you could do in the most part
[Mt_Rider] 8:14 am: Nevermind , you just said it....
[HSmom] 8:14 am: Either he's abusive to mom and escalating out of control, or
he's crazed with grief over his sick baby, and he pulls a weapon.
[HSmom] 8:15 am: I can try to call a "Code Strong" which results in "Paging Dr
Strong to Room such-and-such".
[Mt_Rider] 8:15 am: If you aren't in the immediate area, would the evac
principals be the same? Can you secure any rooms in the area?
[Mother] 8:15 am: hmm not much of a plan
[pauline] 8:15 am: to bad they don't have an armed security officer there for
you
[HSmom] 8:15 am: That will bring me two unarmed security guards and a social
worker to talk the guy down.
[Mt_Rider] 8:16 am: A solid door (not glass) on any room?
[Mother] 8:16 am: can I ask if you would go to work in a bird flu situation
[HSmom] 8:16 am: Our staff lounge has a solid door and is locked - badge access
only.
[Mt_Rider] 8:16 am: Call for Bruce Willis instead....
[jewlzm] 8:16 am: lol
[pauline] 8:16 am: lol
[HSmom] 8:17 am: All the patient rooms are fish bowl like, so we can see the
monitors, etc.
[Mt_Rider] 8:17 am: Yeah, that's what I thot. What protection have any of us if
WE are the patients in the hospital???
[Mother] 8:18 am: oh, that's scary MtR
[HSmom] 8:18 am: In bird flu or pandemic flu...If I thought I was 'clean' I
probably would not go to work. Unless I had worked already and been exposed,
then I wouldn't go home.
[HSmom] 8:18 am: Geez MtR, I don't even want to think about that.
[HSmom] 8:19 am: Pauline, actually I agree with you about prayer. It really
doesn't seem like I have a lot of other options.
[Mt_Rider] 8:19 am: When my mom was in, a neighboring room had an incident. Old
lady attacked her roommate cuz she thot that woman was sleeping in her dh's
bed!!! Poor thing was confused but....
[Mother] 8:19 am: sorry ladies, but I have a dIL with a crisis, so best go. Hugs
all
[HSmom] 8:19 am: I could be fired for carrying my LEGAL handgun at work. Or even
for having my pepper spray.
[HSmom] 8:19 am: Sorry to see you go Mother... hope it all works out!
[Necie] 8:19 am: bye mother. have a good day.
[pauline] 8:40 am: mt . have a bob type bag in car at all times it will give you

[The Lounge]: pauline has left at 8:41 am
[Necie] 8:42 am: if i had to bug out/escape, i think it would be more planned in
a vehicle. in this small community i see it more as a place for people to escape
TO. so on foot, into the woods type thing doesn't seem to be a big possibility
here
[HSmom] 8:42 am: Traffic would be awful, yes. We had a weather event a bit back
and it took my neighbor 12 hours to get home. This was NOT snow. The roads were
bare and wet. Typically, his rush-hour commute is 60-75 minutes. You could make
the drive in 45 minutes in no traffic. But with this weather, it literally took
12 hours.
[Mt_Rider] 8:42 am: yeah, traffic and barriers when everyone (not prepared) is
thinking of just getting in a car and driving..
[Mt_Rider] 8:43 am: Big thing I think is to be prepared for Plan B, C & D.
[Mt_Rider] 8:44 am: Plan A - use vehicle and proceed to destination.
[Mt_Rider] 8:44 am: Plan B - what?
[TheCG] 8:44 am: Houston's only about 2 hours away on a good day, but when the
hurricanes came through, it took people 14 hours. (no, I wouldn't be going to
Houston. Just using as an example)
[Necie] 8:44 am: i start with plan B-all back roads-not even a state highway
[TheCG] 8:44 am: when they made us work during the ice storms, I had a bag in my
car with clothes, water, food, and candles for several days in case I couldn't
get back home.
[Mt_Rider] 8:45 am: Plan c or D have things packed so that you can abandon
vehicle if it becomes necessary?

[HSmom] 8:45 am: I always keep a bag in my car.
[HSmom] 8:45 am: And a plan to abandon the vehicle.
[Mt_Rider] 8:46 am: But in a EVAC situation where you are throwing all sorts of
things in ..make sure BOB is riding in a prominent place. Not under other, non
portable stuff.
[Necie] 8:46 am: brb-coffee
[Mt_Rider] 8:46 am: ALSO, (experience from wildfire evac) Don't pack your spare
tire/tools under all the rest of the stuff!!
[HSmom] 8:46 am: Since our property will eventually become our bug out location,
we selected it's location based on accessibility from several directions.
[Mt_Rider] 8:47 am: several directions -- goood!
[Mt_Rider] 8:47 am: have you scoped them all? for bridges, etc?
[HSmom] 8:48 am: There's bridges. No getting away from that.
[Mt_Rider] 8:48 am: What about security in car travel? Like if jerks set up
roadblock?
[HSmom] 8:49 am: But if one bridge is out, another might be okay.
[HSmom] 8:49 am: I honestly don't think there is anywhere I can go without
crossing a bridge
[Mt_Rider] 8:49 am: Our Mt terrain sets some steep limits too.....pun intended.
[Mt_Rider] 8:50 am: no fording the stream areas?
[HSmom] 8:50 am: I'm considering leaving a pistol hidden in my car. Really
hidden, as in I'm not telling.
[TheCG] 8:54 am: bye MtR
