This week, we'll talk through scenarios. How to act/react. How to keep safe. How to stay healthy.
Thursday chat times are 7-9 am Pacific, 8-10 am Mountain, 9-11 am Central, and 10am - noon Eastern. Depending on the flow of discussion, the topic will occupy the first 60 - 90 minutes of the session, with time for chit-chat after. The formal, on-topic portion of the chat will be saved and posted to this thread, so don't say anything you don't want recorded forever!
If you participate in a saved chat, you should review the posted log and make sure you haven’t divulged any personal information. If you find something that you said that you would like edited, please PM me. If I do not reply in a timely manner, you may PM Darlene.
To use chat: Look about two or three inches from the top of your screen. There is bar that says, on the right-hand side, "Welcome Your User Name". Just beneath it, there is another bar with a few links. Click on "Chat". It will open another window and load. You can also click on the pretty script Chat up at the top of the screen, by the Mrs. Survival picture.
You'll know you're in when you have a big open screen that says near the top "Your User Name has entered the room." Then things that others are 'saying' (typing) will start popping up below that.
If you look to the right, it will show the names of the users currently in chat.
To 'say' something, type in the bar at the bottom of your screen. You can add smilies, too. Hit enter or click on send when done. You can also use that bar to change the color of your words. If there are only a few people in chat; it's easier to read if everyone is a different color.
(Sorry for the late 'reminder.')

Better late than never! Our first scenario - a lady in a parking lot requesting help - got eaten when I got booted out of chat. What follows below is our second scenario.
[HSmom] 8:16 am: Okay... new scenario... Pandemic influenza has come to your
town/city/region. Travel is restricted to essential personnel. Hospitals are
limping along. Physician offices are closed - they're helping in the hospitals.
You're home with the exact family you live with now...
[HSmom] 8:16 am: I liked 'snacking' too! lol
[] 8:17 am:
[] 8:17 am: hubby, 2 sons, 2 cats and a dog okay and....
[] 8:18 am: 4 kids, one older than me
[HSmom] 8:18 am: Select the 3nd oldest person in your household... think for a
minute... who it is...
[] 8:18 am: 6yo ds
[HSmom] 8:18 am: That's my older dd - 8 yrs. What about you?
[] 8:18 am: our 19 son
[] 8:18 am: me
[HSmom] 8:18 am: Leah?
[HSmom] 8:18 am: Skagit?
[HSmom] 8:20 am: If there are only two in your household, use the younger
person.
[] 8:20 am: they fell asleep GL you need to share your sugar from yesterday
[] 8:20 am: I'll go get the fudge
[Skagitgal] 8:20 am: Ahhh, not three here, unless you allow for extended family
already in SIP. Otherwise it would be SIL.
[Leah] 8:20 am: I'm sorry, this chat is archived...I don't want to say.
[HSmom] 8:20 am: That person awakens today with a cough, low grade fever and
feeling icky. He/she doesn't seem terribly ill, but what if it's pandemic
influenze? Here are your three questions to discuss.
[HSmom] 8:21 am: That's fine Leah - just play along in your head.
[HSmom] 8:21 am: Question 1: How do you attempt to contain this illness?
[HSmom] 8:21 am: Question 2: How do you care for this sick person?
[] 8:21 am: am i prepared with mask and gloves in the house?
[HSmom] 8:21 am: Question 3: What impact will be felt by the rest of the
household?
[HSmom] 8:22 am: Start wtih question 1.
[HSmom] 8:22 am: I don't know MT3B. Are you? Right now? If so, you may use them.
If not, sorry.
[] 8:22 am: oh goodie
[Leah] 8:23 am: You would want to close off the room from the rest of the house.
Use an outside enterance.
[The Lounge]: jewlzm has entered at 8:23 am
[] 8:23 am: everyone get a mask....lock son in his room and feed him under the
door
[] 8:23 am: I would have a sick room sealed off as soon as BF starts to become
an issue in this country. He stayes in there until well for a few days. ONE
person goes in, with mask, scrubs etc.
[Skagitgal] 8:23 am: Into the isolation room that person goes. Spare bedroom set
up already with what is needed.
[Leah] 8:24 am: Seal off vents that lead to your furnace. Use a source of heat
ONLY for that room.
[] 8:24 am: stay in my room with door shut, and plastic across the
door, sleep, warm drinks brought to door and left for me to reach out and get ,
mom and teens can take care of 3 yr old
[HSmom] 8:25 am: Good morning Jewz, we just started a scenario. I'll copy and
paste to fill you in...
[Leah] 8:25 am: If you have a central furnace, the germs travel through those
vents into the rest of the house...
[] 8:25 am: 6 yo doesn't have a terribly huge role yet, so we would manage ok
until he's better
[jewlzm] 8:25 am: morning.. and ok .. Ill just sit and read for awhile to catch
up on whats going on
[] 8:25 am: seriously isolation, wash bedding daily in bleach and anything else
that he will come in contact with
[] 8:26 am: we don't have central anything
[Leah] 8:26 am: In my case, I have an old motorhome, it can hold 6 people if
necessary.
[HSmom] 8:26 am: Okay... new scenario... Pandemic influenza has come to your
town/city/region. Travel is restricted to essential
personnel. Hospitals are limping along. Physician offices are closed - they're
helping in the hospitals. You're home with the exact family you live with
now...Select the 3nd oldest person in your household... think for a minute...
who it is...That person awakens today with a cough, low grade fever and feeling
icky. He/she doesn't seem terribly ill, but what if
it's pandemic influenza
[Skagitgal] 8:26 am: I have plastic to hand, that creates an air lock between
the sick room & the rest of the house. Room has porta potty, etc. but only a
window. No outside door.
[HSmom] 8:26 am: Here are your three questions to discuss. Question 1: How do
you attempt to contain this illness?
[HSmom] 8:21 am: Question 2: How do you care for this sick person?
[mommato3boys] 8:21 am: am i prepared with mask and gloves in the house?
[HSmom] 8:21 am: Question 3: What impact will be felt by the rest of the
household?
[Leah] 8:27 am: Could you convert a garden shed?
[] 8:27 am: Nice thing about the room we'll use is no carpet, easy to clean and
disinfect, and there's even a little room between that room and the rest of the
house to use as a buffer!
[Leah] 8:27 am: Excellent
[Leah] 8:28 am: Oops! The bleach got spilled or this person is allergic to
bleach, I'd need to use something else.
[] 8:29 am: room has bathroom, outside entrance through window, plastic that
could seal off the vents coming into the room, have some gloves and masks would
be easy to put a microwave in and leave me to fend for myself and let mom and
kids take care of themselves out in the rest of the house dh is on his own
whereer the semi is at at the time
[] 8:29 am: (ok, here's a question, would be unsafe to have the window in that
room cracked open in an epidemic? Would the outside air be contaminated or Do
you have to be close to someone to catch it?
[] 8:29 am: if he has to come out of sick room he is to wear mask himself
[HSmom] 8:29 am: That's excellent GL -about the room setup.
[] 8:29 am: the bleach is diluated 3 to 1 and it is in a spray bottle
[HSmom] 8:30 am: GL - outside fresh air is fine and is in fact healthy.
[] 8:30 am: lysol works so does alcohol
[] 8:30 am: I new it was healthy, just wanted to make sure it was safe!
[] 8:30 am: I mean if it ends up just being a cold, I don't want to give him flu
in the sickroom lol
[HSmom] 8:31 am: WHAT IS THE SINGLE MOST IMPORTANT THING EVERY FAMILY CAN DO TO
PREVENT THE SPREAD OF ILLNESS?
[Leah] 8:31 am: I would think it would be best, to dilute any bacteria or virus
present in the room.
[] 8:31 am: WASH YOUR HANDS
[Leah] 8:31 am: WASH YOUR HANDS!
[] 8:31 am: cleanliness of hands
[] 8:31 am: oh, you mean in the scenario LOL
[] 8:31 am: wash hands and cover your face when you sneeze or caugh
[] 8:31 am: well that too LOL
[Skagitgal] 8:31 am: If illness progresses as we think it will, nursing care
will be needed. The care giver has to have PP. personal protection clothes. to
be removed before rejoining the rest of the group. Cleanleness, hand washing,
masks.
[HSmom] 8:32 am: Yay!! Wash, wash, wash!
[] 8:32 am: you can buy those paper isolation gowns online
[Leah] 8:32 am: Please keep in mind that hands means to your elbows...
[] 8:32 am: wash and sanitize hands
[] 8:32 am: or make your own and wash them
[HSmom] 8:32 am: Okay... question two: How do we care for this person?
[] 8:33 am: one person needs to do all of the caregiving
[] 8:33 am: (Hey cool, my ds just got a watch that uses potato as battery!)
[HSmom] 8:33 am: Today, he/she has only a cough, low grade fever and mild
malaise. What do you offer? What should your patient do today?
[] 8:33 am: lots of liquids and meds for fever
[] 8:33 am: Yep, just me in there, I don't trust dh to wash
[Leah] 8:34 am: Stay in bed, keep warm, plenty of clear liquids
[] 8:34 am: chickn soup with LOTS garlic
[] 8:34 am: vinegar, honey and lemon for the cough
[] 8:34 am: ginger, lemon, honey tea
[Leah] 8:34 am: DEFINATELY chicken soup. electrolights
[jewlzm] 8:34 am: vinegar?
[] 8:35 am: cuts the stuff so it can be coughed up
[] 8:35 am: best cough syrup around next to JD
[Leah] 8:35 am: A tablespoon of apple cider vinegar in a glass of water helps to
sanitize
[jewlzm] 8:35 am: never heard that one.. thanks for the explanation mt3b
[] 8:35 am: rest , warm broth, soup, liquids, honey lemon ginger tea,
[HSmom] 8:36 am: You might reconsider treating the fever. It's a low grade fever
100.5 and your patient isn't miserable. Fever does serve the purpose of killing
germs with heat.
[Leah] 8:36 am: I don't medicate until it's over 100
[] 8:36 am: no tylenol here
[] 8:36 am: try to keep the patient comfortable
[Leah] 8:36 am: The doctor told me that when the kids were little
[HSmom] 8:37 am: I don't medicate fever until the person is too sick to drink
enough fluids - the number on the thermometer varies at that point, but I use
behavior as my guide.
[HSmom] 8:38 am: Okay, they got through the first day, ate well, drank even
more. Everyone else in the household managed fine too.
[Leah] 8:38 am: And now...?
[] 8:38 am: i seem to hear the other shoe hitting the floor
[] 8:38 am: sorry to leave in the middle of a scenario but need to run get
things done for the day good luck everyone
[jewlzm] 8:39 am: bye pauline!
[HSmom] 8:39 am: Around midnight, you go to check on your patient and find
him/her with a fever of 103, somewhat confused and breathing rapidly. What do
you do?
[jewlzm] 8:39 am: have a good day
[] 8:39 am: bye pauline have fun
[HSmom] 8:39 am: Bye pauline... hope you get over your 'flu'.
[jewlzm] 8:39 am: cool water bath
[Leah] 8:39 am: He's too hot - cool him down!
[] 8:39 am: prop him up on pillows, cool water bath, ice packs, and crushed ice
to nibble on
[Leah] 8:40 am: Alcohol rub
[The Lounge]: has left at 8:40 am
[Leah] 8:40 am: Give him the medicine now.
[] 8:40 am: yeah I'd give tylenol at that point. Sponge down wth room temp water
[] 8:40 am: try to get meds down him
[jewlzm] 8:41 am: after the cool water bath try and get meds down him
[HSmom] 8:41 am: Not cool - tepid. Placing a feverish person in a cool or cold
environment causes the capilary beds to constrict and actually increases core
body temperature.
[] 8:41 am: frequent tiny sips of water, or pedialite
[] 8:41 am: I knew that I knew that candy for me!!!!
[HSmom] 8:42 am: You did GL! Yay!
[] 8:42 am: happy dance
[Skagitgal] 8:42 am: Sorry, DS just left to go back to Idaho.
[jewlzm] 8:42 am: cool here is anything that has to have cold water added.. none
of us use anything other than hot water in our showers..
[Leah] 8:42 am: Actually, I think the alchohol rub has been discouraged of late,
come to think of it...
[] 8:42 am: i am with you on that jewlzm
[] 8:43 am: brb
[jewlzm] 8:43 am: Darn.. and I dont have a clean house for companies
[HSmom] 8:43 am: I think you're right Leah, but I wasn't sure.
[] 8:43 am: no company remember no travel it is restricted for medical personal
[Skagitgal] 8:44 am: Small chips of ice in the mouth are comforting, if ice is
available.
[HSmom] 8:44 am: So with meds and environmental changes, the temp is now only
99.5. The breathing, however remains rapid.
[jewlzm] 8:44 am: lol I was refering to Skagitgals son
[] 8:44 am: :red: oops sorry
[The Lounge]: Leah has left at 8:44 am
[jewlzm] 8:45 am: tis ok mt3b.. I live in Idaho.. so I was making a funny
[] 8:45 am: k
[HSmom] 8:45 am: You lift your patient's shirt and see the outline of the ribs
with every breath (called retractions). Now what? Hospitals for those that are
needing ventilators. Doctors and Phone-a-Nurse are not available. What do you
do?
[Skagitgal] 8:45 am: Not going all the way to S. Id. where I think you are.
[Leah] 8:45 am: Did I jam?
[] 8:45 am: humidifer
[The Lounge]: Leah has entered at 8:46 am
[] 8:46 am: and make my own tent had to do this before
[] 8:46 am: I need to listen here as I dont know
[Leah] 8:46 am: I got expired. Did my post come through before I was kicked off?
[] 8:46 am: nope
[] 8:47 am: plastic sheeting hung around the bed and set a cool mist humidifier
next to the bed
[HSmom] 8:47 am: WB Leah. The question is: You lift your patient's shirt and see
the outline of the ribs with every breath (called retractions). Now what?
Hospitals for those that are needing ventilators. Doctors and Phone-a-Nurse are
not available. What do you do?
[] 8:48 am: start chest messages---cup hand and beat sides of chest and back to
loosen muscles to ease breathing
[Leah] 8:48 am: I posted about the alcohol rubs being good for sanitizing, but
too harsh for the whole body. It causes shivering in the patient. I must add
that to my notes.
[] 8:48 am: it will also help loosen the gunk in the lungs
[jewlzm] 8:48 am: never had to make my own platic tent.. I just put the
humidifier as close to the patients head as possible
[] 8:49 am: So we have mucousy lungs. expectorant?
[HSmom] 8:49 am: That's a great one MT3B! - It's call Chest Percussion Therapy
or Chest PhysioTherapy (CPT). It doesn't have much effect on muscles, but it
does help loosen the secretions in the airways.
[] 8:49 am: our 19 yr old asmatha bad when it was a kid and we lived in an area
prone to forest fires and this what the doc told me to do was to make my own
breathing tent and do the humidifer and chest massages to help him breathe
[HSmom] 8:50 am: Ding! Ding! Yes GL, an expectorant.
[Skagitgal] 8:50 am: In home care, at this point I'm not sure there is anything
else a layman can do. We have shop oxygen that we could use, but the illness is
now firmly lodged in the chest, [thinking BF, not just common cold/flu]. A form
of liquid Benadryl.
[The Lounge]: westbrook has entered at 8:50 am
[HSmom] 8:50 am: If you don't have plastic for a tent, you can use blankets your
towels.
[] 8:50 am: YAY! MORE CANDY FOR ME!!!
[Leah] 8:50 am: Posted earlier was vinegar as an expectorant, I think.
[HSmom] 8:50 am: Good morning Westbrook.
[] 8:51 am: garbage bags shower curtains anything that will help contain the
moisture
[westbrook] 8:51 am: g'mornin'
[Leah] 8:51 am: Morning !
[] 8:51 am: morning westbrook
[jewlzm] 8:51 am: is there anything else that can be used for an expectorant?
Some are allergic to vinegar
[] 8:51 am: Hi westie
[Skagitgal] 8:51 am: morning
[HSmom] 8:51 am: So we have humidity, CPT, expectorant... there's one other
really important nursing intervention to help keep secretions moving.
[HSmom] 8:51 am: Guianifesen (?sp) is an expectorant - buy some ahead of time.
[] 8:51 am: late night tv?
[Leah] 8:51 am: we had massage, too
[HSmom] 8:52 am: NO GL, it's not tv.
[] 8:52 am: you also need to keep the head elevated
[] 8:52 am: lol
[westbrook] 8:52 am: no late night Kingdom of Loathing
[HSmom] 8:52 am: Anyone know?
[Leah] 8:52 am: oops that IS cpt
[HSmom] 8:52 am: Yes MT3B - but that's not the one I was thinking of.
[Leah] 8:52 am: liquids?
[HSmom] 8:52 am: It's close though: positioning.
[] 8:52 am: drink lots of liquid
[HSmom] 8:53 am: You do not want your patient spending lots of time in one
position.
[Skagitgal] 8:53 am: Is there liquid guianifesen
[Leah] 8:53 am: Sideways, I would guess would help with lungs.
[HSmom] 8:53 am: He should change positions every 2 hours. Side, back, other
side, prone.
[HSmom] 8:53 am: Yes Skagit - check cough medicine labels.
[Leah] 8:54 am: Ah, yes. Let gravity help. More comfortable too.
[Skagitgal] 8:54 am: I have the pills, curious..thanks.
[HSmom] 8:54 am: Head of bed up, except when prone, can easy breathing.
[westbrook] 8:54 am: postual drainage technique.. was some where on the board
last year
[HSmom] 8:54 am: Mucinex makes guianifesen pills and has WAY more guianifesen
than the liquids.
[] 8:55 am: My mom never let us lay on our backs when we had a cold!
[] 8:55 am: got a link HSMom?
[HSmom] 8:55 am: To what? Mucinex? I just compared labels while standing in
Walmart.
[HSmom] 8:56 am: Want me to grab them from the bathroom? I can tell you exactly.
[] 8:56 am: gotta run will must do some work now darn it.....
[] 8:56 am: I don't think I've ever seen that brand!
[jewlzm] 8:56 am: bye mt3b!!!
[Skagitgal] 8:56 am: Yeah, I do have those. Curious about protocol for someone
with BF. Where lungs are impacted, and patient to weak to move themselves.
[Leah] 8:56 am: Rite Aid "Mucus Relief" has 400 mg per tablet.
[jewlzm] 8:57 am: they have store brands that are cheaper that work just as well
[Leah] 8:57 am: Goodbye
[HSmom] 8:57 am: Bye MT3B tahnks for coming!
[The Lounge]: has left at 8:57 am
[westbrook] 8:57 am:
http://www.cysticfibrosismedicine.com/html...xt/postural.htm
[] 8:57 am: must stock up
[HSmom] 8:58 am: Skagit, I never siad BF. I said pandemic flu - might not be
bird.
[Leah] 8:58 am: HSmom, could you get yours? It would be nice to have that in the
archive.
[HSmom] 8:58 am: Great link Westie!!!!!!! Thank you!
[westbrook] 8:58 am: I am looking for the video showing how this is done
[] 8:58 am: ditto
[HSmom] 8:59 am: Leah, in the interest of time. I'll post it to the archive
after chat is over.
[Leah] 8:59 am: Good, the info might be helpful.
[HSmom] 8:59 am: I have one other point that, as a nurse, I feel is really
important: avoid cough suppressants.
[Leah] 9:00 am: You WANT them to cough at this point.
[westbrook] 9:00 am: but mostly it is cup your hands.. patient laying head down
as in upper link.. Ironing board braced against a couch was mentioned... with
hands cupped, clap them on the patients back clipty clap as you hit the left
hand then the right hand on their back.
[Skagitgal] 9:00 am: A patient too ill to swallow pills, was what I was
thinking. I keep harping on BF, I've helped family through other types of
flu..wondering about BF.
[HSmom] 9:00 am: If your patient has a bunch of crap in their lungs - yeah what
Leah siad.
[Leah] 9:00 am: Crunch the pills up and dissolve them in a spoon of liquid.
[westbrook] 9:00 am: this technique breaks up congestion in the lungs and helps
the patient get it out when they cough
[Skagitgal] 9:01 am: Broken pills may be bitter
[westbrook] 9:02 am: reading the entire page is what needs to be done.. but
scroll down for how to do on
babieshttp://www.providence.org/healthlibrary/contentViewer.aspx?hwid=ug1720&serviceArea=generic
[Leah] 9:02 am: I say "Tough noogies, take it anyway"
[HSmom] 9:02 am: Pill crushers are about $5, but you can also put pills in a
baggie or just a folded paper and beat with a meat tenderizer or a hammer. Some
pills won't crush, but will dissolve in warm water. DO NOT EVER crush any
'extended release' formulation of a pill.
[The Lounge]: has left at 9:02 am
[HSmom] 9:03 am: Ooopsies!
[The Lounge]: jewlzm has left at 9:03 am
[HSmom] 9:03 am: Oh my! It's contagious! lol
[Leah] 9:03 am: Why not crush the extended release? Too strong?
[Skagitgal] 9:04 am: Horseradish, ginger ,hot pepper juice all promote
expectorant qualities.
[] 9:04 am: (question, if more than one person is sick they are in the same room
right?)
[The Lounge]: GoatLady has entered at 9:04 am
[Leah] 9:04 am: I wonder if they got "expired", too?
[GoatLady] 9:04 am: ARG what did I miss
[HSmom] 9:04 am: Yes Leah, you get a huge burst of the med all at once, rather
than over time, as it's intended.
[Leah] 9:05 am: Tapdancing goats
[GoatLady] 9:05 am: so if crushing not good how do you get it down?
[HSmom] 9:05 am: Here's what you missed: copied and pasted: [HSmom] 9:03 am:
Ooopsies!
[The Lounge]: GoatLady has entered at 9:04 am
[Leah] 9:06 am: Awwww, you forgot the dancing goats
[GoatLady] 9:06 am: lol
[HSmom] 9:06 am: Crushing is fine for most meds, but not "extended release".
When possible, don't buy extended release formulations. Instead buy the ones
that you have to take every 4 hours.
[HSmom] 9:06 am: Or 6 hours or whatever.
[Leah] 9:06 am: You CAN dismantle some thing like the "contact" separate all of
the colors. They have different dissolving times.
[HSmom] 9:06 am: An extended release med will say "extended release' on the
packaging. It will say not to crush, break or chew it.
[Skagitgal] 9:07 am: What if the patient doesn't make it.
[westbrook] 9:07 am: if you are prone to problems, there is a suction machine
you can use to vacuum out the lungs.. needs little training to use
[Leah] 9:07 am: Then you face disposal of the body
[HSmom] 9:07 am: Aw Skagit!!! In my scenario, they were going to get better!
[GoatLady] 9:07 am: Ok no time release got it
[westbrook] 9:08 am: I am putting my loved ones on the mountain in lawn chairs!
[GoatLady] 9:08 am: I don't want to think about that one
[HSmom] 9:08 am: Westie, suction doesn't clear the lungs, just the upper
airways.
[Skagitgal] 9:08 am: Well, I DO like that idea better!!
[HSmom] 9:08 am: But even that can help.
[GoatLady] 9:08 am: westie you nut ROTFLOL
[westbrook] 9:08 am: if SHTF.. people will think they are my lookout!
[HSmom] 9:08 am: In my scenario, systems like hospitals are still functioning,
but only for the very ill. There would probably be some provision for removal of
bodies.
[westbrook] 9:09 am: make cardboard rifles! don't want the real thing to rust.
[Leah] 9:09 am: Clearing the upper part would make room for the junk in the
lower to go, I should think.
[HSmom] 9:09 am: Do realize that you'll probably have to wiat to have a service
until well after burial and passage of the pandemic.
[westbrook] 9:09 am: in my world.. the hospital is 40 miles away. I have lawn
chairs ready!
[The Lounge]: jewlzm has left at 9:09 am
[The Lounge]: jewlzm has entered at 9:10 am
[Leah] 9:10 am: My pioneer ancestors did it, I can too.
[westbrook] 9:10 am: wrap the body in a sheet.. bury. fashion a cross out of
tree limbs, say a prayer and get back to the living.
[HSmom] 9:10 am: It can help Leah, but it's not for sure. It's not even 50-50.
If you have a well-seated pneumonia, clearing the upper airway will make your
patient more comfy, but won't touch the pneumonia.
[Skagitgal] 9:11 am: OK, patient getting better. How long a recovery time...what
to do if another ill body has to have the bed.
[HSmom] 9:11 am: They bunk together. In the hospital, we call it a 'cohort' room
when two or more people with the same cooties share a room.
[westbrook] 9:12 am: blow up swimming pool mattresses store nicely!
[Leah] 9:12 am: Contagious or not?
[HSmom] 9:12 am: BTW, don't discount bunk beds. The patient can sleep on the
bottom. The caregiver on top, and you're half-way to your humidity tent.
[westbrook] 9:12 am: using 5 gallon buckets and a sheet of plywood cut down...
place blanket over board on top of buckets.. this raises the bed high like a
standard bed
[HSmom] 9:13 am: Contagious yes...same illness, usually done during RSV season.
[HSmom] 9:13 am: That's a good idea Westbrook.
[Skagitgal] 9:13 am: Just curious..how long after onset is a patient with flu
contagious?
[Leah] 9:13 am: Then I don't want them in the same room. The first patient is
too weak.
[HSmom] 9:13 am: I don't know.
[westbrook] 9:15 am: tent is easy.. suspend plastic from ceiling... moisture can
be brought in by boiling a pot of water and set inside tent on table..
Eucalyptus Oil in the water..may help
[Skagitgal] 9:15 am: I was wondering if there could be re-infection between two
recuperating patients?
[Leah] 9:15 am: Contagiousness
Spread by virus-infected droplets that are coughed or sneezed into the air, the
flu is contagious. People infected with the flu are contagious from a day before
they feel sick until their symptoms have resolved (usually about 1 week for
adults, but up to 2 weeks for kids).
[HSmom] 9:15 am: Leah, the 1st won't reqcquire the infection. They already have
it. It's a virus and they live in the same family. The first gave it to the 2nd
(before he came down with symptoms. It hasn't had time yet to mutate to another
shape that the 1st would reacquire. The 1st's immune system would still
recognize it.
[HSmom] 9:16 am: Thanks for finding that leah.
[HSmom] 9:16 am: brb
[Leah] 9:16 am: Duration
After 5 days, fever and other symptoms have usually disappeared, but a cough and
weakness may continue. All symptoms are usually gone within a week or two.
However, it's important to treat the flu seriously because it can lead to
pneumonia and other life-threatening complications, particularly in infants,
senior citizens, and people with long-term health problems.
[westbrook] 9:16 am: kids always share flu back and forth, after Mom gets it,
Dad gets it and round it comes again... this time morphed into a bigger monster
[Leah] 9:18 am: I agree, I don't want them in the same room. Patient 1 has
already been in a fight, he needs time to recover fully.
[The Lounge]: Skagitgal has left at 9:18 am
[Leah] 9:19 am: I would move patient 1 back into his own bed, and put patient 2
into the motorhome.
[The Lounge]: westbrook has left at 9:19 am
[The Lounge]: jewlzm has left at 9:19 am
[GoatLady] 9:20 am: what if you have ONE suitable sick room?
[HSmom] 9:20 am: We have our own epidemic here!
[GoatLady] 9:20 am: here we go again!
[The Lounge]: jewlzm has entered at 9:20 am
[GoatLady] 9:20 am: let's suction their airways LOL
[Leah] 9:20 am: Patient 1 is no longer contagious.
[GoatLady] 9:20 am: oh right
[Leah] 9:21 am: Shall we have those dancing goats , now?
[Leah] 9:21 am: intermission
[GoatLady] 9:21 am: but if they get it close together it's ok?
[Leah] 9:21 am: Yes, I would put them in the same room at the same time, if they
were both sick
[HSmom] 9:22 am: hang on ... i'm saving before I get booted again
[GoatLady] 9:22 am: what if you hung plastic around seperate bed areas like in
the emerge ward?
[Leah] 9:23 am: I think for a virus, it wouldn't matter. Thay already have been
exposed.
[Leah] 9:23 am: They
[GoatLady] 9:23 am: k
[Leah] 9:23 am: It would help for the humidity though...
[HSmom] 9:23 am: I'm looking for a link on using cohort rooms...
[Leah] 9:24 am: tra la la la la, a dancing, prancing we will go....
[GoatLady] 9:25 am: hey I'M GoatLady! I should be dancing!!!
[Leah] 9:25 am: The dancing goats are in your honor, milady!
[The Lounge]: Skagitgal has entered at 9:26 am
[GoatLady] 9:26 am: lol
[HSmom] 9:26 am: Here's one: it's a PDF
http://palin.lshtm.ac.uk/prospectus/short/...hing_cohort.pdf
[Skagitgal] 9:27 am: I got thrown out so far, it took a week to come back
[jewlzm] 9:27 am: grrrrr
[jewlzm] 9:27 am: woo hoo. it stopped eating my posts
[Leah] 9:28 am: Does the flu have complications?
Some of the complications caused by flu include bacterial pneumonia,
dehydration, and worsening of chronic medical conditions, such as congestive
heart failure, asthma, or diabetes. Children may get sinus problems and ear
infections as complications from the flu. Those aged 65 years and older and
persons of any age with chronic medical conditions are at highest risk for
serious complications of flu.
[HSmom] 9:28 am: Here's an abstract of an article that showed cohorting REDUCED
transmission of diarrhea to other patients.
9ampXNMASKENID900" rel="nofollow" target="_blank">http://registration.akm.ch/einsicht.php?...XNMASKEN_ID=900
[Leah] 9:29 am: brb ---coffee run
[GoatLady] 9:30 am: Does anyone want any comfrey? My plants are HUGE!!! I'll be
happy to dry some and send it to anyone.
[GoatLady] 9:31 am: Dont kick me off dont kick me off dont kick me off
[Skagitgal] 9:31 am: Can you send it out of Canada? If you can, I would love a
start. Sure be willing to pay postage.
[HSmom] 9:32 am: here's another page that talks about cohort isolation in a
community wide outbreak
http://www.hpa.org.uk/infections/topics_az...s/mumps_faq.htm
[HSmom] 9:33 am: Another point is that in a pandemic hospitals will be using
cohort isolation too. The NON-flu patients will be in private rooms - almost
like a reverse isolation.
[Skagitgal] 9:33 am: I'm having so much trouble maintaining the connection. I am
froze out. Talk with you all later.
[GoatLady] 9:33 am: Skagital I don't know how to send a living plant, I just
meant the dried leaves LOL
[GoatLady] 9:33 am: bye
[HSmom] 9:33 am: I gotta run... I've done nothing yet thismorning.
[HSmom] 9:33 am: Bye Skagit!
[GoatLady] 9:33 am: bye mom
Ooopsies!
[The Lounge]: jewlzm has left at 9:03 am
[HSmom] 9:03 am: Oh my! It's contagious! lol
[Leah] 9:03 am: Why not crush the extended release? Too strong?

Trying not to keep all my eggs in one basket....
