Friends, our very own Necie has agreed to be our Chat guest this week, and talk to us about fishing. Be sure to come-even if you think it's too hard or that you can't afford fishing stuff; here's what Necie said when I asked her to be our guest:
Quote:
I'm pretty simple when it comes to fishing, so maybe it'll get some interested that are scared that it costs too much or is too complicated.
See you then!!

Thursday chat times are 7-9 am Pacific, 8-10 am Mountain, 9-11 am Central, and 10am - noon Eastern. Depending on the flow of discussion, the topic will occupy the first 60 - 90 minutes of the session, with time for chit-chat after. The formal, on-topic portion of the chat will be saved and posted to this thread, so don't say anything you don't want recorded forever!

If you participate in a saved chat, you should review the posted log and make sure you haven’t divulged any personal information. If you find something that you said that you would like edited, please PM me. If I do not reply in a timely manner, you may PM Darlene.

To use chat: Look about two or three inches from the top of your screen. There is bar that says, on the right-hand side, "Welcome Your User Name". Just beneath it, there is another bar with a few links. Click on "Chat". It will open another window and load. You can also click on the pretty script Chat up at the top of the screen, by the Mrs. Survival picture.

You'll know you're in when you have a big open screen that says near the top "Your User Name has entered the room." Then things that others are 'saying' (typing) will start popping up below that.

If you look to the right, it will show the names of the users currently in chat.

To 'say' something, type in the bar at the bottom of your screen. You can add smilies, too. Hit enter or click on send when done. You can also use that bar to change the color of your words. If there are only a few people in chat; it's easier to read if everyone is a different color.

[HSmom] 7:23 am: Are we ready to get started?
[Necie] 7:23 am: ok. gulp
[HSmom] 7:23 am: Formal opening...As always this chat will be archived, so don't say anything you don't want recorded forever. Ladies please help me welcome our guest expert: Necie! *golf clap*
[Leah] 7:24 am: applause!
[Necie] 7:24 am: *necie curtsies* thank you. grin
[HSmom] 7:25 am: Feel free to bombard her with - I mean ask questions. Necie, when and how did you start fishing?
[Necie] 7:26 am: oh, when i was little. as long as i can remember. my mom fishes and my grandpa. we had a pond and a small lake on the farm.
[Necie] 7:27 am: started out with cane poles then. easy for kids. none of them 'casting' problems
[HSmom] 7:27 am: What gear did you use then and what gear do you use now?
[The Lounge]: cookiejar has entered at 7:28 am
[Necie] 7:28 am: i still prefer closed faced reels. most think that open faced are better. not sure why. they tangle on me, and with closed faced you just push the button and toss.
[cookiejar] 7:28 am: Hola!!!
[Necie] 7:28 am: hi cookie
[HSmom] 7:29 am: Welcome cookiejar!
[cookiejar] 7:29 am: Hey chicas!
[HSmom] 7:29 am: So with a closed face you don't have to flip open the metal thingy?
[Necie] 7:29 am: with pan fishing-rig with bobber, sinker, hook and bait
[cookiejar] 7:30 am: What's our subject?
[HSmom] 7:30 am: Necie is our guest expert on fishing.
[Necie] 7:30 am: yeah-the bail-dbf likes open faced like that. i like the push button. have 3 poles. i prefer shorter. he prefers longer. my longest is 6 fl. his shortest is 6 1/2 ft.
[Necie] 7:31 am: expert=haha
[Leah] 7:31 am: I haven't fished for 39 years - you have to know more than I do...
[cookiejar] 7:31 am: Is this fresh water lake, river? Fly?
[Necie] 7:32 am: my favorite pole for bluegill is a 4 1/2 ft ultra light that cost me $16. have had it for 5 yrs.
[Necie] 7:32 am: i've never fly fished, but my dad does.
[cookiejar] 7:33 am: Necie, what size hooks and style for bluegill
[cookiejar] 7:33 am: style hooks..oops
[Necie] 7:34 am: i like the size 6 hook, they're a bit bigger than the ones most used, but i don't poke myself as much and still fit a gills mouth. i use aberdine (sp)-not the barbed.
[Necie] 7:35 am: cookie-mostly fresh water lake. have fished lake mi. for salmon. river for trout and deep sea-charlotte harbour, fl
[Necie] 7:36 am: well, out of charlotte harbour, in the gulf.
[cookiejar] 7:36 am: Thanks Necie, I've pretty much only done surf & deep sea...can I ask another question?
[Necie] 7:36 am: have gone to quebec and fished the lakes there for pike and walleye. that was fun.
[cookiejar] 7:37 am: :awe:
[HSmom] 7:37 am: How do you know what you're fishing for? I just throw in a line and hope for the best.
[Necie] 7:38 am: do you know what kind of fish are in the water you're fishing at? then you target the fish you want.
[HSmom] 7:39 am: How would I know that? (I'm serious Necie, this is Remedial Fishing that I need here.)
[Necie] 7:39 am: different tackle and bait. i like pan fishing the best. local and cheap for me.
[cookiejar] 7:39 am: pan?
[cookiejar] 7:39 am: que?
[Necie] 7:39 am: ask at the bait store? older folks that fish?
[HSmom] 7:39 am: Yeah, you throw a pan in the water. lol
[cookiejar] 7:40 am: LOL
[Vic303] 7:40 am: I like the Cabelas rod & shimano reel I got last year on Mother's day! Never felt a reel that smooth! It's an 'openfaced' reel too.
[Necie] 7:40 am: pan=bluegill, perch, crappie. fish that ya fry in a pan. grin
[Vic303] 7:40 am: We tend to the #8 hooks for bluegill and smaller bass.
[cookiejar] 7:40 am: ahhhhhhhh:)
[HSmom] 7:41 am: Bait store? As cookie says: que? Burbsville here. I can get worms at the large chain sporting goods store or from my compost.
[cookiejar] 7:41 am: Do you have a fishing kit for your BOB?
[Necie] 7:41 am: hooks, sinkers, bobbers are fairly cheap. just keep trying different ones til ya find the ones YOU prefer.
[HSmom] 7:41 am: Sporting goods store is staffed by 18 yr olds who think it's strange that I want more than one box of ammo at a time.
[cookiejar] 7:41 am: lol
[Necie] 7:42 am: i have a tackle box-it's portable grin
[cookiejar] 7:42 am: I see people at the canals with handfishing lines...no pole, tried it?
[HSmom] 7:43 am: Is the smaller hook number larger or smaller?
[Vic303] 7:43 am: I have some line & leaders & hooks (aka Stren-in-a-straw) for the big BOB. None in my PSK though.
[Necie] 7:44 am: nope. not with no pole. ??? dm fishes the canals down there for catfish. i don't like catching/cleaning catfish-don't mind eatin' em. grin
[Necie] 7:44 am: larger # =smaller hook
[HSmom] 7:44 am: thanks
[HSmom] 7:45 am: Bigger hook = bigger fish?
[cookiejar] 7:45 am: what type of pan fish are you most likely to find consistantly around the states, is it trout? or perch?
[Necie] 7:46 am: bluegill, i think. southern call it bream or brim.
[Vic303] 7:46 am: Or as my kidlets call 'em BLOOOPERS! lol.
[cookiejar] 7:46 am: ahhh bream! Dem I know or well have tasted from soneone elses catch...lol:yeah:
[cookiejar] 7:46 am: someones (sp)
[Necie] 7:46 am: bass are national, too, i think. seem to be bass tournies everywhere.
[cookiejar] 7:47 am: bloooopersssslol
[Necie] 7:47 am: lake okachobee (sp) have HUGE bream yumyum
[cookiejar] 7:48 am: Yes indeed
[Necie] 7:48 am: seems the farther south ya go, the bigger the fish are.
[cookiejar] 7:49 am: Inland freshwater for beginners-what do I basically need? real basic...lol
[Necie] 7:50 am: when i jump in the car to go sit on shore, i take my pole, bucket, bait, and a towel. now if nothing goes wrong, then i don't even need my tackle box. but i usually just toss it in the car, just in case.
[Necie] 7:51 am: small towel. just to wipe hands.
[cookiejar] 7:51 am: cool, so a basic for the clueless pole would be what? (gotta have the towel for Princess boot club)
[Necie] 7:52 am: basic pole for panfish-anything from a 4 1/2 ft ultra light to a 10 ft light/med action.
[HSmom] 7:53 am: Do you have to go early in the morning?
[Necie] 7:53 am: reel-just a small closed or open faced, depending on what you're comfy with
[cookiejar] 7:53 am: coooooool! tongue.gif
[Vic303] 7:54 am: Cookie, I would start with a cane pole, hook-line-bobber, pair of pliers (pullout hooks) & a tub of worms. Towel would be nice as is bugspray, and a hat for sun.
[HSmom] 7:54 am: And about how much time do you spend out when you fish?
[The Lounge]: pauline has entered at 7:54 am
[Necie] 7:54 am: no-we use the solunar table on www.infisherman.com alot to see good/bad fishing days and best fishing times. crappie fishing is best at night around here, but have seen them caught during the day.
[HSmom] 7:54 am: Good morning Pauline!
[cookiejar] 7:54 am: Hey pauline
[Necie] 7:55 am: hi pauline
[Vic303] 7:55 am: We usually go in the evening after supper and go until dark.
[cookiejar] 7:55 am: Thanks Vic
[pauline] 7:55 am: morning everyone
[Necie] 7:55 am: we usually only go for a couple hours at a time, but may go 2 or 3 times a day when they're biting. some spend the whole day on the lake-like 6 to 8 hrs.
[HSmom] 7:56 am: And for that you get?? A whole bucket full?
[Necie] 7:57 am: depends on if they're biting. have caught 1 fish in 4 hrs and dm and i caught 274 in 3 hrs.
[HSmom] 7:58 am: OO <-that's my eyes bugging out! WOW!
[Necie] 7:58 am: that was THREE buckets full-and AMAZING. doesn't happen very often
[HSmom] 7:59 am: That's 1.5 fish per minute!
[cookiejar] 7:59 am: 8s
[HSmom] 7:59 am: Makin' fun o me, Cookie?
[cookiejar] 8:00 am: no looking amazed myself
[Necie] 8:00 am: hmmm. seems like it was faster than that. well, that's from putting in the boat, til pulling out.
[cookiejar] 8:00 am: well, I'm gonna go, see you folks later
[The Lounge]: cookiejar has left at 8:00 am
[HSmom] 8:01 am: wow - that's amazing.
[Necie] 8:01 am: FISHING LISCENCE-make sure you have one. (just wanted to make sure i mentioned that) grin
[Vic303] 8:01 am: Hey Necie, what closedface reel do you like?
[Vic303] 8:01 am: Oh yep, the $$ penalty is high in TX if caught w/o license!
[Necie] 8:02 am: i had a zebco micro 11. replaced it with a shakespear micro, cuz the local store didn't have the zebco. still wish i had that one, but would have to order it
[Vic303] 8:02 am: DH oldest got her first Zebco 202 for Christmas!
[HSmom] 8:03 am: Do you always use a boat to fish?
[The Lounge]: MtRider has entered at 8:03 am
[Necie] 8:03 am: not always. sometimes just go sit on shore. nice all by self. or with kids it's easier on shore. they tend to get stir crazy fast.
[HSmom] 8:04 am: Good morning MtR.
[Necie] 8:04 am: hi mtr
[HSmom] 8:04 am: And on shore they can wander off and play with sticks and pine cones, etc.
[Necie] 8:05 am: all three of my poles are zebcos. micro, 30, and omega. dbf talked me into the omega. it's 6 ft/med action. kinda heavy for my tastes, but good for walleye
[MtRider] 8:05 am: Uuugh, It's morning? I'm still tyring to find my fingers on the keyboard.... Hello all.
[Necie] 8:06 am: yeah, vic. a liscence here is $17-fine for not having one is over $100
[HSmom] 8:07 am: Ouch! It's worth it to get one.
[HSmom] 8:08 am: Necie is teaching us how to fish MtR. I recall you trying to fish last year. Been out again this year?
[MtRider] 8:09 am: Couple times...no fish. I'm more dedicated to enjoying the quintessential Colorado babbling brook than the fishing, I think.
[HSmom] 8:09 am: Necie, do streams and brooks tend to have fish big enough to eat?
[MtRider] 8:10 am: I think here they can take your fishing gear - including boat if you fish without liscense...
[Necie] 8:10 am: have been to co. 5 or 6 times. lived there for almost a year. never fished the mountain rivers. hmmmm, what's up with THAT?! we did trout fish in a reservoir near frisco. didn't catch any, but ds2 did.
[MtRider] 8:11 am: Oh there is plenty of trout up here.... Different kinds. Kokane salmon in the reservoirs...mmmm.
[Vic303] 8:11 am: Yeah I think repo'ing equipment is part of the penalty of no license in TX too. HI MTR! Did you read your new message yet?
[MtRider] 8:11 am: I'm just not experienced with fishing.
[MtRider] 8:12 am: Hey Vic! I'm reading it now.... yikes, multi-taksing first thing in the morning... laugh
[Necie] 8:13 am: yeah-we fish near a friends house, it's called **** creek, kind of a small river. trout, gill, bass, catfish, suckers
[MtRider] 8:13 am: So Necie, does a real fisher-person have to get specific experience with each type of fish, each type of stream, lake, pond, etc??
[HSmom] 8:14 am: Wow. I see little creeks (or cricks) and think: "naaah." Can you eat suckers? What about bottom feeders? Is that bad?
[Necie] 8:15 am: suckers are good if done right. dm pickles them. mixed with sour cream and put on crackers. mmmmm yummy. like creamed herring.
[Necie] 8:16 am: check in your state fishing guide. should have lakes that have mercury warnings where ya shouldn't eat 'too' much fish taken out of them
[HSmom] 8:16 am: Oh. That doesn't sound very good to me. I'm looking for fish to fry in a pan, or broil or make into fish chowder.
[Necie] 8:17 am: a real fisher-person to me is just someone who loves fishing. wink
[The Lounge]: pauline has left at 8:18 am
[HSmom] 8:19 am: Are there things you look for in a good fishing spot, or do you rely on word of mouth to know where the fish are good?
[Necie] 8:19 am: i think the best place to find knowlege about fishing are locals that fish. get ya the cheapest equipment ya can and go to the water and ask the older guys/gals there fishing what they're using and how they fish.
[Necie] 8:20 am: good fishing spots tend to change. finding them is half the fun.
[MtRider] 8:20 am: I got my pole, etc at a garage sale and also picked the brain of the older man who sold it to me. He was thrilled to talk fish!
[HSmom] 8:22 am: Oh that's a good idea MtR... I may look for tackle at sales just so I can ask questions. laugh
[MtRider] 8:22 am: bring a chair...they won't let you get away!! lol
[HSmom] 8:23 am: And be sure to buy something too.
[Necie] 8:23 am: i have older folks that come into work daily and tell me where they're biting, the bait they're using-or on the other hand, how bad the fishing is.
[MtRider] 8:24 am: He told me to look for bait in the stream. Take the little net he gave me and place it downstream from a rock. Lift the rock and little .....forgot what he called them...float into the net. Trout witll eat them. Haven't tried that yet.
[MtRider] 8:25 am: Also talk to the guy/gal at the local bait shops for current local info....
[HSmom] 8:25 am: That's a nice bonus of your work Necie. You're realling 'in the know'.
[Necie] 8:25 am: oooh, that sounds like fun. catching your own bait. smile
[HSmom] 8:25 am: realling = really
[MtRider] 8:25 am: rcok shrimp? Is that what he called it?
[Necie] 8:26 am: i like worms. nothing with legs. ick
[HSmom] 8:27 am: Do you compost Necie? When we fished a few weeks ago, we just pulled red wigglers from the compost. Took about 2 minutes to get a dozen. We were get TONS of hits, but all from little bait stealers way to small to eat.
[Vic303] 8:27 am: Rock shrimp? Crawdads I think...
[MtRider] 8:27 am: bait stealers...
[HSmom] 8:28 am: What about artificial lures? My dh has this white grub that he likes to use. As you reel it thru the water the tail spins. He also caught a fish once using 1/2 a yellow foam earplug.
[MtRider] 8:28 am: Dunno, Vic. Whatever these under-rock critters are, they are really small to be trout bait tho.
[Necie] 8:29 am: we just have regular earth worms to dig up around here. no red worms(the itty bitty ones). i buy red wigglers (about the size of a regular worm), or wax worms (like a little grub) or night crawlers or minnows
[Necie] 8:31 am: i have a bunch of artificial, but hardley ever use them. dbf does once in awhile. we want to try those new 'gulp' artificial panfish bait. he said they'd be good for a BOB, too
[MtRider] 8:32 am: yellow earplug...lol They do use a fluorescent orange ..uh..mini marshmellow like thing here...
[HSmom] 8:32 am: So worms, grubs or minnows.
[HSmom] 8:32 am: Sounds about the same MtR. We were lake fishing with my uncle in Wisc. He couldn't belive that my dh caught anything with that. lol
[The Lounge]: Leah has left at 8:33 am
[Necie] 8:33 am: i think it's all local, though. southern indiana i've heard uses more crickets.
[MtRider] 8:34 am: I've heard crickets up here too. I can catch them in my house in some seasons..yuk.

At this point there was a Mrs S hiccup and a bunch of people got booted. I saved real quick and here we have it. Sorry for the abrupt ending.

Many thanks to Necie for sharing all her wisdom with us!!
