I've started making the gifts I'm giving for Christmas this year and am making some serious progress actually. Has anyone else started thinking of or making/buying gifts yet?

Yep, I have already started getting gifts. There are a lot of half to 75 percent deals going on now. I got heavy weight flannel shirts, reg. $19 for $4.50. There were a lot of soap gift sets really cheap, too. I even got one wrapped with cellophane and a red bow that I am using for Valentine's Day.
I am collecting stocking stuffers, too.
I got some nice, fancy burgandy silk potted poinsettias to give to the neighbors this year for about $3. These are things I normally could not afford to give.
Even thrift stores have great things to collect during the year.
No one but me will know.

Violet those poinsettias sound lovely. That is what I love about starting early. I can get nicer things and for more people than I would be able to if I waited until the last minute.
When target marked their toys down to 75% in January I bought christmas and birthday gifts for all 11 kids on my list for what 2 would have cost regular price. They are getting great gifts and I'm saving a ton.

I was at Target and was able to buy mittens, toboggan and scarf sets for $2.50/set. Bought enough for our 3 DD's and DDIL and one for myself. Also found lounge sets for the above on sale, and I made a pattern for a head wrap (for after washing your hair). Actually, made the pattern from one my daughter had received as a gift. Have made one so far, and it's super easy and fast. Will now start watching for nice towels to go on sale.
I like to start right after Christmas, by watching for sales(since we have 5 children,2 son-in-law, and 1 daughter-in-law,and 4 grandchildren).

Oh MomM good buys there...
I did that one year, too...the headwraps. Made the pattern from one a friend received and liked so much she made more and shared the pattern. They are great especially for folks with long hair who like to wrap it up after showering so it doesn't drip all over. Nice shampoos bought on sale and other little spa items from the dollar store along with this make a great gift.
I am thinking of making knitted things as part of our gifts next year....was thinking of making knitted envelopes to put the cards in and then the knitted envelopes could be used to keep things in, perhaps may make them felted.
I started making some "housewives" for the Civil War guys as gifts. These are nifty little Civil War era type sewing kits. I am making modern ones for their non-reenacting wives..out of felted knit. These hold several colors of thread, small folding scissors, a few buttons and needles and some safety pins.
We only have the three of us, mother and father in law, my brother and hubby's sister to buy for. But we have a special friend out of state we also like to remember. That is about the extent of our need to gift give so we don't have to worry too much. Everyone else gets cookies or chocolate banana bread or something home canned.

Oh yes, as soon as the sales start in, we start buying for next year. Most of the time, I am all done except for a few things for stockings by the first of November.
Right now they have candle sets for about $8.00 that were over $10.00 before Christmas, but didn't get one of them yet, waiting to see if they go down more.
We have 3 adult children, 2 DDIL's and 7 grand children, 3 step grand children and one step great-grandchild. Then we buy for 4 neices and nephews and their spouces and children too.
I know if it weren't for the $ store, we would be spending so much on the great-neices and nephews, but if we can find things in the $ store for them we do.
I have a couple totes downstairs that I always have some thing in so I'm ready for those Birthdays too, that was get invited to.

Oooh cloth grocery bags would be a great idea. You could personalize them to each person. How great.

yes i am thinking and getting ready to start sewing quilts, aprons , cloth grocery bags, casserole caddies, and bookcovers for recipes that i am writing down for the kids and my aunt need to start buying those expensive items for the teens in may and then pick up as many games (board/card) as i can throughout the summer we are also getting some of the small wood trivia/brain teaser type games for them and their BOB's that we will be adding to again as well this year.
we want you to be ready with your personal storehouse filled with at least a years supply.

Wow Pauline sounds like you have a lot of sewing ahead of you. Those sound like some wonderful gifts. I wish someone in my circle was crafty (besides me)homemade gifts are the best.

I have started thinking christmas already. I got an email from my auntie saying that she has books rooms for the whole family to get together for christmas this year, but we have to confirm by the end of feb. So, with christmas on the brain, I have to think of what to make. I dont know who I will be getting in the family name exchange, but it will be great!

That sounds like it will be great pixie. We always draw names the year before so we have the whole year to shop. Dh's family however draws names on Thanksgiving! Too short notice for me.

If I asked my family what they wanted now, they
would think that I was nuts!
Everybody shops in December! I get my shopping finished
in October or November.
I'm going to start now. If I see something that catches
my eye I'm going to purchase it. It's going to save me
money come December!
