Prickly Pear on steroids! I like that! Yep, them r pears! You see them all along the highway growing in the fences. I have one clump on my place that is really tall and big with nice tunas on it.

There are two main varieties and one doesn't have as many thorns as the other. Both are good groceries.

My Grandma had gooseberries. I loved them. I do rember the scratches.

I have three types of prickly pear around the house and yard, two don't have thorns, the cow tongue does and it has grown as much as 8 feet in height on some plants. Pads, fruit, jelly

Mesquite has thorns, and the beans make a good jelly, and when ground with the right type of equipment, a flour that is good for diabetics.

Dewberries along the driveway, viscious, good fruits for cobblers and jelly.

In places in Texas, agarita, good berries, will eat you up if you aren't careful.

Some kumquats are very thorny and very hardy. Yucca is an effective barrier and has a useful root. And don't forget nettles.
