Gibberellin Upward and downward in plant vascular system Promotes growth; lengthens stem; involved in flowering and fertilization; involved in growth of new leaves, branches and fruit
Auxin Tip of shoot downward in vascular system Promotes growth; elongates cells, inhibits growth of lateral buds; fosters growth of ovary walls for seeds; prevents leaf and fruit drop; orients root and shoot growth
Cytokinin Roots upward in vascular system Promotes growth; stimulates cell division; encourage growth in lateral buds; blocks leaf senescence
Abscisic acid Short distances in leaf and fruit Inhibits growth; Opposes the 3 growth hormones; induces and maintains dormancy
Ethylene Through air as a gas Promotes maturation; enhances fruit ripening; promotes dropping of leaves, flowers and fruits
Phytocrome (Pigment) Not transported; remains in cell that produced it Detects light; Changes form in response to light; mediates flowering, germination, growth and plant form
