No, sorry not mine. Found it on the site, and thought the folks here would be interested in it.

I'm going to try this, though. I don't want to plant too much outside in the dirt, in case the house sells fast. This I could take with us. I have several of those bins on hand and empty...

Hydroponics is AWSOME! It just amazes me how it works. I suggested that Leah post this link in Urban, because it would be the perfect way to grow (although pretty labor intensive) in a SHTF/TEOTWAWKI situation for people who wouldn't have access to soil and would want to grow indoors away from prying eyes.

The pic that Leah posted is from the link. The guy bought the plants and washed the soil from the roots and transplanted them into a soilless medium (rockwool). You can start your seeds direct in rockwool (or any other soilless medium-I joked that you could grow tomatoes in old socks--but it's not a joke-ya could).

Tradition hydroponics relies on electricity to run the pump to keep the nutrient solution flowing to the roots. Without a way to run the pump, the plants would have to be watered multiple times a day to keep the roots moist-this can be done. Nutrient solution can also be captured to reuse.

You would have to have access to water, stock/save seeds, and stock fertilizer for your solution (don't know how well plants would grow with just plain water??? My guess?-not very well.).

Plants need less space, grow faster, and are better grown hydroponically.

...there are some things that can beat smartness and foresight. Awkwardness and stupidity can. The best swordsman in the world doesn't need to fear the second best swordsman in the world; no, the person for him to be afraid of is some ignorant antagonist who has never had a sword in his hand before; he doesn't do the thing he ought to do, and so the expert isn't prepared for him.

This reminds me of our neighbor in Corpus Christi years ago. He had a hydroponic garden in his garage. He used toilets - to grow uh, well, I forget now. It's been a looooooooong time ago.

I was in grocery once and called the produce manager over and said, "I think there is a riot in the tomato section!" We walked over there and I pointed out the sign. It said, "Hydropanic Tomatoes" Luckily, he had a sense of humor like mine. laughkick
