Ok so I am not the most knowledgeable about herbs and this year I intend to expand my knowledge. I have never grown dill and really don't use it so I have decided to add it to my herb garden. But I have a couple of questions...

1. It is growing long and stemy can I top it can it grow back?

2. It is now flowering what do I do with the flower? I have have been using the "leaves"

You're using the 'dill weed' part, if you let it set you can use the 'dill seed'.

The Ant and the Grasshopper is the best children's story ever; and if you're reading this forum you know why.

If you let it go to seed, it will come back every year.
I find the timing of the the self-sown seed to be a little early for my use in pickles. By the time my cucumbers start producing well, the dill has already flowered and I don't have enough in the right stage for my needs. I try to start my own to flower a little later.

Dill is a few feet, sometimes a yard or more long. You use the flower in pickling and other things. If you trim the heads and dry them, you can use the seeds and 'feathery' looking leaves as herbs.

If you want it to come back year after year, let it go to seed. It will do it's own thing and before long, you will have a bunch of it. I'm growing dill for myself this year, but my gramma gave me this advice.
All it takes to make a difference is one person.

If I try to grow dill, the plants are eaten alive with aphids. I gave up !

I can, you can, too !

Dill here will not grow thru the Summer. I am sure it will depend on the temps where you are whether or not it will come back after cutting the tops. Here it wouldn't because the of the heat.
I love growing dill tho. I really don't use it that much, but grow it for the black swallowtail butterflies here, they love, love, looovvve it , and I love watching them. thumbs.gif

I usually find several of the swallowtail caterpillers chowing down on my dill. I just let them be. There's plenty for all of us!
