I know the 2 are companion plants, but I heard that by planting onions next to the strawberries, the berries will take on an onion flavour. Is this true?

I don't see how a strawberry could possibly take on an onion flavor. Maybe it's just an old wive's tale

THNX, That's what I was thinking. I don't see how in ALL of the charts I've seen where they are compatible that NOT ONE says anything about the taste

Good Companions to Onions
After we had filled two full raised beds full of onions sets, we still had a pile of left over onions to contend with. We looked at our favorite book Carrots Love Tomatoes and found that we could interplant our onions with any member of the cabbage family, beets, strawberries, tomatoes and lettuce. But that they do not like peas and beans at all. Now our strawberries are peppered with onion starts. Scott reminded me that we put some in the strawberry bed last year and those onions did the best of all last year. We’ll see how they do this year

My onion crop has failed miserably this year.
I started my own from seed and used the organic potting soil, since I couldn't find the type I usually use in a small bag. Big mistake. The soil held too much water and didn't drain well. My seedlings died from damping-off fungus.
I bought bare root onion plants and put them out and they have sat and sulked. They've hardly grown any new leaves and now they are bulbing up and sending up flower stalks. They won't be getting large bulbs and those that do form won't store well because of the bloom.

This is the first year I've had any problems with them. You never know what will do well from one year to the next. It's feast or famine. I'll be buying mine from the store this year.

So, I was telling Hubba that NONE of the charts I've read say ANYTHING about adverse "reactions" to planting them together & that no one on the forums I'd posted this on had said anything to the effect. So I asked him if he was going to let me plant them together (because he'd been skeptical after the person said something) and he says to me- "Sure, if they taste like onions, I'll just smile & eat them." He hates onions, BTW!!! ROFL!!!

Maybe the onions will taste like strawberries!

Seeing we had a few onion bulbs left over after we planted I may try putting some in the strawberry bed just to see what happens. This may help keep the squarrels from eatting all the ripe ones?

I can guarantee that planting onions with your berries will not deter squirrels.

I didn't mention this, but another of the problems I encountered with my onion crop this year was the squirrels. I came out and found whole rows of the freshly planted onions missing. there would be piles here and there where they had placed them down together as they pulled them up. It was like a human had gathered them in their hand and then laid them down.

I had to re-plant and cover with toille fabric to keep them out.

Squirrels are not afraid of onions...the little furry demons!!

Good you mention that Homemaker.I've planted loads of onions in Germany and the two chestnut trees outside the yard house a lot of red squirrels.
They look cute but do steal as well. Will bring some netting to protect the garden when I go back.

I haven't seen ANYTHING yet that deters squirrels. The only thing you can do is add chicken wire & pray. And I've tried a LOT of squirrel deterrents.

We have guardian dogs for livestock...maybe we need to train garden guardians, too? Bet they'd sell like hot cakes! (or hot dogs...lol...)

I've planted both garlic and onions in my strawberry bed and the stawberries LOVE it and don't have any sort of carry-over flavor. Do check in the Gallery, under C4C's container gardens. I think Bed #1 has the berries.
