I had not gone for years but my sisters-in -law and I all went last year and we actually had a good time. I was not going to stand in line for anything but waited around and did get a few items for good prices. We went out to breakfast afterward and enjoyed ourselves!

Years ago, (pre-children) I used to go with all of my cousins when we were gathered at Grandma's for Thanksgiving. It was a blast, we made a real day of it
Last year dh braved the crowds and got my mom's Christmas present, a laptop that was a REALLY good deal.
As for me, if there's something a I want and decide it's worth it, I'll go...that hasn't happened in a long time.

DH and I needed to replace 50 yr old chairs. We both wanted recliners. i really wanted a rocker recliner. We had been looking at various stores for a couple of months. Didn't see exactly what we wanted, and the price at LazyBoy was really high.
I saw recliners in the Penneys Home Store ad. So we went. We tried the chairs I had seen in the ad. Then DH wandered and saw a power rocker/recliner. He took me to try it. We had to get a clerk to get it plugged in. I pushed the button and settled down and almost didn't get up. It felt so good. Price was under $300 - maybe for just a few hours. They had 8 I think - in cartons. We got one for each of us. We had to stand in line a while to pay for them.
Got the chairs loaded and stopped at Sears on the way home so DH could get the shoes he likes. They were on sale for the early hours also. Then we came home and had a nice breakfast.
We unpacked the chairs and have enjoyed them every day since. We got a good product for a very good price. The shoes were what DH always buys. So it was worth doing Black Friday for what we got.
I don't know if I will shop Black Friday again. Probably only if I see a specific item I want in an ad at a good enough price to make it worth while.

Shop it every year. It's a ritual with my Mom and I. Last year was my DD's first Black Friday shopping trip...at age 3 she was very excited about it. She was great and loved it. Not sure how we'll do it this year since I am trying to do ahead just in case things fall apart by then. Budget VERY tight so I may be going to keep mom straight on what she needs this year. Last year I hit the outlet mall at midnight....got home and crawled in bed for an hour and then jumped up and we left for our early bird sales.

Does anyone do black friday shopping for Christmas and other need?
We probably will this year since I'll be spending Thanksgiving with my mom's family and they love shopping. However we do not get up at 5am to do the shopping. We get up whenever we wake up usually around 7 or 8 and then head out to get breakfast and do some shopping. We aren't ever in a really big city so have never seen any of the dangerous crowds you see on the news. We would never do anything like that to risk our family's safety for a gift. We just like to get out and see what's going on. Most of us are pretty much done Christmas shopping by then anyway. We just do it as a family activity.
