We are almost ready here as well. Still have to get one driver out of bed though I suspect that he will be awake as soon as his SO starts driving (she's not so good at it yet LOL) Like AH I have last night's cream hanging on the side of the wagon and will have fresh buttermilk biscuits for tonight slathered with rich creamy butter (got to love those jerseys).

All the animals are milked and fed. We also have a lot of milk what with the cows and goats both. I'll let it sour naturally today and try to set it tonight to make cottage cheese or just a vinegar type cheese. I still have some milk left from this morning if anyone want's some before we leave, otherwise the little pigs are going to get it.....

Breakfast was easy as I brought oatmeal to a boil last night, added dried fruit and some nuts and put it in the insulated cooker. It was ready to eat first thing this morning. I could have done the same thing by putting it in a Dutch Oven and burying it near the fire last night to slow cook but this is a lot easier to clean up from as the pans are Stainless Steel. While I cleaned up from the meal Mom made biscuit sandwhiches of left over meat for our noon meal. We made coffee and put it in a big thermos for on the trail, have cool water in a big crockery water cooler/dispenser for easy access on the road (stays cool in there a long time too). DH and the rest of the family took care of the animals and hitching up chores and we're ready to roll.

I have to tell you though, I'm not sure my hands are going to hold up to holding those horses in today. I already have blisters despite the leather gloves I was wearing and my arm muscles are beaten. Phew!!! Hopefully they will be easier today now that I've had such great help with adjusting the harness. We didn't have it right and I'm glad we found out the first day out instead of waiting until they were raw before doing something about it. Please people, keep an eye on your animals, especially their feet and your OWN feet as well. Ten miles today? Lots more miles than it sound like if you have to walk them. I'm glad we're taking it easy these first few days but I may still have to have DH or one of the others drive today.

Okay, laggard is NOW out of bed, thanks to some pranks by his sister and BIL, ohhhh and his MOM too. Seems they found the Big wind up alarm clock he had managed to hide.....That thing is almost as loud as Michaels triangle and a LOT more jarring. 24.gif Did you all hear it?

1) OGS is up and roaring around chanting "when are we going to leave, when...when"? cele.gif Oh to be 6 again......

2)Hey, Rusty (Michael) did you get your wagon repacked last night?

1) Lori says - wait a minute a 6 year old wanting to leave? Michael was doing that at 6 am and he's 59 (well most of the time - so maybe you WERE right about that 6 year old - LOL)

2) YES - I got it all redone so it is much easier to repack after each stop. Now the Colman Kitchen is in the back on top of 2 barrels so now we don't have to take it out each time to use. Just drop the front lid (makes a shelve) and pull things out (like everyday dishes, spoons & folks. drinking glasses, coffe cups, etc.
When we are ready to go all Ihave to do is drop the lid, put stuff away and close it back up - Cool!

Supposed to be clear and sunny today.

Here's a dozen eggs. I packed a bunch in the grain barrels and the hens are still laying.

MtRider is not seen on Roan this morning....has anyone seen her? Roan is tied to the back of their wagon with the donkey. ....Yes, she was at the women's bathroom briefly this morning..... shrug.gif

MtRider sticks her head out of their wagon and lurches with no grace to sit beside Mr.MtR .....displacing BigDog in the process. Dog is willing to retreat to the bed made of deep foam pads just behind the wagon seat. "Ugh!" is her only comment. Mr.MtR doesn't even try to hide a grin. She whaps him on the shoulder and digs into a bag for an energy bar and a water bottle. .....this day does not bode well. And where ARE we?

A bit more awake and functional after protein, I am trying to figure out if I can ride up to have a talk with MrSmith&MrJones. Yeah, in a minute. This had not been a good morning. Not surprising results of nearly 2 full nights of not sleeping....and running my head off for a week to get things done before leaving ....AND the first full day on the trail AND a lovely discussion around the fire last nite.... 0327.gif So the MS said ENOUGH! I simply could not function this morning. So I staggered out the the tent and to the restrooms...and then crawled into the wagon bedding nest to sleep again. Oh sheeesh, it's been 3 hours since that ...um, "rooster" crowed. Leave it to Micheal to bring along a fake rooster. [mumbled something about giving him his triangle back.... whistling.gif ]

Good thing DH does know how to milk my goat...tho neither he nor she are too pleased about it. She's nearly going dry anyway and will need to be freshened at the end of the trail. I don't want her too full with pregnancy when we reach the final climb over the mountain pass tho.

..dang! I need a potty break...of course. Involves crawling OVER Bigdog [and she feels that she's SO comfortable that she doesn't want to move over mad.gif ] and into the center of the wagon where the potty chair is situated. Better than finding a wide tree... rolleyes.gif

After putting myself a bit more together, I am finally able to hop off the wagon and unhook Roan from the wagon. DH already saddled her but I pull her out of the way of the slowly rolling wagons to put the bridle on and clamor aboard. [still exibiting lack of grace here huh.gif ]

Meander slowly up towards the head of the first group. After some discussion with the Benefactors, I turn back to spread the word. There is a large town coming up and the city police will have to escort us. There seems to be no route except on the residential streets on the outer rim of the town. The police chief was agreeable enough but the officer assigned has been showing attitude. He's not happy about the extra bother and seems to think our animals will be unmanageable.

.....UM.....

He may be right. Lets call a halt here and try to secure any animal that can be. Lets get EVERYone out and walking that is able so that the livestock herds have as much supervision/protection as possible. Ah, Mother'sMother is going to drive their oxen with Mr.Mother close at their heads. That's the idea. Steph's clan and CeeGee's is spreading out to help.

I'm very worried about neighborhood dogs coming out to "have fun" or fight with our herd dogs. Secure any problem dog [like mine] inside your wagons! Also small children. I'm leashing my 4 dwarf goats and need someone to walk them so they don't spook and bolt. Oh Thank you! I've got be on Roan cuz she may bolt....stupid horse doesn't like strange dogs. And I've no idea how donkey-dear will react.

Let's make a corridor with the animals/wagons between the lines of folks walking on either side of the street. At least they blocked the traffic till we go thru. They used to drive cattle thru the streets....a VERY long time ago. Folks are not used to such a thing now.

What else can we do? Anyone? I think we'd be safer going thu Main street. Do TRY not to run over any children who are too curious! Sheeeeeesh!

Everyone ready? ...OK lets move thru slowly.

The first block was uneventful...and then word spread that there was a parade or something to watch. People poured out into the sidewalks and streets. The children were not all supervised...tho we heard a couple screeches for children to return to the yard. One large woman thundered out, "William James Micheal Hancock, get back in this yard immediately! A boy of about 10 ran to answer that summons without delay.

Well the street got narrow due to the onlookers. A dog ran out barking but was retrieved quickly. The sheep strayed into a flower bed...and also were retrieved quickly but not before setting off a loud protest by the flower's owner. I'm next to a wagon. Annarchy! Do you have a jar of homemade jam or something quick that I can ride back and hand that lady in compensation? Whew, thanks! She was well, ....astonished when I thrust the jar into her hands from up upon Roan.

Just as I was wheeling back to monitor this right side of the street, a large dog ran out into the goat herd and CHAOS ensued. The Pyrs and Anatolians surrounded the strange dog who had indeed grabbed an unfortunate doe. At that point all hellatious hooey broke loose. Someone fired a shot ...in the ground, as it turned out. No one ever found out if it came from our train or an escorting officer or an onlooker.

But the screaming mothers ran for their children and sirens began and .... Our animal herders were quite remarkable. The wagons came to a stop while many rushed to untangle the herds and dogs. The strange dog had high-tailed outta there and the 2 LGD's that had pursued a ways, had all returned to guard stance. It was quite remarkable to see how the animals crowded around those dogs, knowing where their safety would lie. A cow kicked someone...who is that? Looks like a leg injury. DH and Quilty are heading for the person on the ground.

Some idiot in the crowd is shouting that the person was shot. I holler back that the COW KICKED HIM AND WILL YOU PLEASE KEEP THE DOGS AND CHILDREN BACK OFF THE STREET? I did see that one happen. OW!

A man I recognize [Mr.Hughs, head of 'security' for the Benefactors group] is riding back to our group. His message is to wait right here until their group passes through. Then they will send folks back to help safely herd our group thru. This is the first real interaction between these two groups. I know that MrS & MrJ hired many folks to assist with herding their livestock and for security purposes. Now they are sharing that to get us out of this mess. We've got many blocks to go.

With the calming of the animals, most of the crowd has quieted. But it's plain that we are troublemakers and aren't their lives hard enough these days without having this riffraff wild and loose in their neighborhood? And WHO is going to clean up all this animal poo. [not exactly the words used, mind you.... dry.gif ] OK, on the manure issue they have a point. Mr. Hughs and I discuss sending a team with shovels and cart to clean up....and we begin to spread that word thru the crowd. It's not helping the temper much.

And then one man, bless him, hauls out a large wheelbarrow and rakes and shovels. His two sons and one teen daughter are with him. "Never mind that," he says. "If you're going to feed a family from a garden these days, you need fertilizer. I never had it delivered to my door before. C'mon kids. Lets collect this black gold."

Maybe we should ask that family to join us!

....and we still have 7 miles to go? 0327.gif

Camp tonite is scheduled to be in a farmer's pasture...rented for the night by the benefactors. We're allowed to fill up the water wagon with the hose at his well. The little green porta-pottys are also rented. No hot/cold running water tonite. sad.gif But most of us have the black bags with shower hose. We'll get a few of them up and ready for showers anyway. We'll need it.

At least we'll be a looong way from this town. rolleyes.gif

So where were YOU when the CHAOS hit today? I know there were many acts of heroism & quick thinking. And who got kicked and how is s/he? And how is the goat...tho I saw her up and running after the dog let go of her. Any other casualties?

MtRider [I'm going to sleep for two days after this... ]

I was with the horses on the camper wagon, not driving though, but walking them through. I'm glad I did for when that shot went off they almost spooked. It was only because DH dropped back from the oxen and helped hold them that they calmed. Good thing Mom was in the other wagon at that point. At least they stood when she gave them the command to do so. I know we always listened to that command as kids too. It obviously works on animals just as well.

I didn't see the goat the dogs got but I believe it might have been one our family that got kicked by our cow while trying to keep them from spooking. I can't leave the horses until someone comes to be with them and DH can't leave the oxen. I don't know who or how bad. I understand that Q and Mr.MTR are with them. Anyone know what happened? Could someone come to be with the horses so I can go to them? pray.gif

Good thing I brought those jars of plum jam. At least I still have a couple for DH. He would be hysterical if it had been his last jar.

All in all, our wagon seemed to fair well. The canned goods fell over but the extra towels kept them in their area. DH walked for a bit but during the ruckus, climbed up and took the reigns to keep an eye on things. Seemed to him things were under control.

AH, your rooster was late this morning, didn't you see me next to the little bbq fire? Had coffee warming while I studied. I'm an early riser too, wasn't the moon gorgeous as it set this morning? Brilliant oranges, yellows and reds.

Mr_Rider, we have some Band-Aids and neosporin ointment if you need it for your blisters. Just say'n.

CGA, I'm not allowed to eat the eggs yet. I want to keep up on my health issues, don't need to have a stroke or heart attack on the trip. But, I do make a mean 'over easy' egg, also have a few mexican dishes I could make with them. But, I am sure PCS has some that are better. Will the extra fit in your freezer?

I would like to say, I am impressed how everyone is handling their animals. I'd help, but I'd get in the way. Frank stuck his nose out once and retreated back to his hammock, giving me one of those looks like, "how DARE you!" Silly ferret..

DH gave me the reigns about noon and crawled in back to read one of the books he heisted for the day. I think I just saw him head back to the 'Library' for another book.

We checked our load, un-hitched the oxen & are letting them graze. After watering them, I cleaned out the bucket filled it and warmed the water on my bbq and took a sponge bath. (what a rush of memories) DH did the same.

We have a medium fire pit in the middle of the wagon ring. I collected some dead wood from the surrounding woods and am sitting off from the fire, breaking it into 'fire size' pieces. Coffee is on and so is a pot of water for tea or cocoa, I have some extra cups for anyone who may want some.

Anyone know what PCS is cooking for dinner tonight? If she's too wore out, we'll munch on some of our jerky for tonight.

Michael hands off the reigns to Lori and jumps down to go over and help Mother. "I watch your Horses go check on your family" , we are OK as our horse and ox are used to being around people and cars seeing they all came form Amish Farms. Michael talks softly to the horse and hums a old tune to settle them down.

When we got to 'camp' we checked everything over and things are all OK.

Annarchy want to borrow my ax for the wood? Or just leave it and I'll do it in a minute - Love chopping wood ( it warms you twice ya know).

Gather the kids over by the fire after Supper as Lori and Michael will be having story hour ( need to calm a few after today) using books form the Library wagon and Michael has a real good story to tell as well. Then it is off to bed for most of us.

I was sitting on the wagon, hanging on to the oxen for dear life. I am NOT accustomed to handling large animals. Next time we go thru a big town, I'd appreciate someone more experienced or at least stronger handling my wagon. I'd have done better walking and keeping my goats and dogs under control.

I did take the precaution of putting my youngest 2 does in the cage with the doelings. Also two of the young Pyrs were tied inside my wagon.

Fortunately the one doe is not severely injured. I put pine salve on the cuts and they should heal ok.

Ann, those eggs are from pastured hens. They will help your cholesterol, not harm it.
We can probably squeeze some more into the freezers if we move the frozen jugs to the ice chests. I want to run back to town for dry ice too. It will keep us from running the generator. I feel the quieter we are, right now, the better.

I strapped a couple of water jugs to the outside of my wagon so the sun is hitting them. They will be nice and hot for baths tonight. Glad I put tonight's dinner in the fireless cooker so it will be ready as soon as we are thru getting the camp set up and animals taken care of.

I need a BIG mug of coffee!

I didn't hear the fake rooster. I'm so used to roosters crowing all hours, I don't pay much attention.

Our animals fared ok from the chaotic situation. We got them calmed back down after some time. DH did get a shot off on the wild dog. He shouldn't come around a wagon train again. I don't know who got kicked, but remember that I have extensive paramedic supplies if we need them. Just let me know.

DH and I and the kids and PB and J sandwiches for supper as we are all really worn out. We plan to turn in early tonight. We will see everyone in the morning. Nite and Blessings to all, firegirl

Well, I was driving one of our wagons. We had decided that since the terrain was city streets the girls and I would drive the wagons so that the guys would be free to help keep things under control. I am so glad that I made OGS sit up with me on the wagon. He sure wanted to down with the guys and "helping", but I was worried that something might happen. I think that we made the right choice. The is something in the Gee family DNA (DH's side) that is amazing with animals. They are able to calm them in most situations (actually it works with people too). Remind me some night around the campfire to tell you the story of MIL with a skunk.

Any way....the guys were able to help calm the animals and get them back where they belonged. I think that the gentleman that came for the manure overheard MrGee say that it sure was a shame to lose that good compost.

OGS had a wonderful time at the story telling tonight....

As we bank the fire and get ready for bed, MrGee and sons bring out the guitars and begin.......

"Amazing Grace, how sweet the sound,
That saved a wretch like me....
I once was lost but now am found,
Was blind, but now, I see.

T'was Grace that taught...
my heart to fear.
And Grace, my fears relieved.
How precious did that Grace appear...
the hour I first believed.

Through many dangers, toils and snares...
we have already come.
T'was Grace that brought us safe thus far...
and Grace will lead us home.

The Lord has promised good to me...
His word my hope secures.
He will my shield and portion be...
as long as life endures.

When we've been here ten thousand years...
bright shining as the sun.
We've no less days to sing God's praise...
then when we've first begun.

"Amazing Grace, how sweet the sound,
That saved a wretch like me....
I once was lost but now am found,
Was blind, but now, I see.

........................................................................good night

Michael, you are a blessing. Thank you so much for coming to my rescue with the horses and for helping to get us out of that setting after things calmed down some. Those horses sure seemed a whole lot better after you were with them a while. I'm going to have to learn that song for sure.

It was one of my grandsons (not the 7YO thankfully) who got kicked. We don't think there are broken bones but we aren't sure. I believe that Q and Mr.MtR are confiring now to try to figure out what should be done. We're still close enough to a hospital if he needs it but that won't always be the case. We knew what we were facing when we chose to come along and we are ready to weather this together.

Not a very auspicious way to start our journey but I felt that everyone worked together beautifully in getting out of that mess. At least we are finally out of that bedlam and in a quiet rural setting for the night. I look for it to be a long one for our family.

day 3 and we are up and ready to go-

Lori woke up early so she made breakfast whilt michael cleaned up the wagon a bit and ckecked everything over. Greased all the wheels and filled our water jugs from the well.

speaking of songs we have a tradition whenever we are on the road going somewhere. As we start out we play 'On the road again' by Willie Nelson ( and we have to start it within 1 mile or else). If we are traveling at night when we first see daylight its 'Here comes the sun' by the beatles. Any time very early in the morning if you listen you may hear Michael sing ' OH what a beautiful morning' from the play Oklahoma, and that was what you heard if you were up early today.

Dishes washed and put away, fire out, Farmer thanked and we are set to go.

As you all are aware, we were delayed. This happens sometimes when you have such a large family.

Arriving about the same time y'all were breaking up camp (having traveled a piece to join you) we are finally on the scene. Still, I'll be doing much more listening (reading) than talking (posting) as I'm finding there is so much to do and so little time to do it.

Every moment is precious, crucial. vital. All of my years of training the children to be responsible, obedient and trustworthy are paying off. So far, just a couple of days into this, we are running smoothly, like a well oiled machine. I can see why the pioneer families considered a man with many sons to be a blessing. From the youngest (5) to the oldest (15) they are doing their part without complaint. They are following the example of their hard working daddy.

The girls and I are constantly busy as well. Planning food, preparing the food, cleaning up the dishes, preparing the beds, etc... aren't microwave and dishwasher easy anymore. I've been trying to be more accurate with my serving sizes as leftovers aren't easily stored, prepared or used again. Thankfully, the dogs are more than happy to handle that little problem

Not wanting to completely abandon their education during this long trip we are reading from the McGuffey Readers as well as taking advantage of what we had already been doing back on our homestead. We call them "Walk and Talks". As we walk, we discuss what we see, contemplate the goodness of our Lord, work on rote memory of math facts, recitation of memory verses and etc...

I don't think that I ever mentioned it to y'all. But I finally got something I had been wanting for a very long time. A Goat Cart! My wethers are earning their way and can pull a surprising amount of weight, they are very strong. This cart can be used for weary children, transporting items from one wagon to the other, etc...

Well, time is wasting and as I said it is precious, so I'll run for now. wave.gif

Glad to see y'all made it, Stephanie!

Well the doe is looking ok. I cleaned the wounds and put more pine salve on them.

Made a big pot of oatmeal for breakfast again. My neices didn't want it so I had them do a huge stack of pancakes. The extras will be used for lunch sandwiches. I got out a jar of meat to make sandwiches.

Had my nephew fill the jugs and strap them on the wagon for baths tonight.

Makinge a big pot of chili for supper. Soaked the beans overnight then put them in the pressure cooker this morning. Let them cook 10 min then set them in the fireless cooker. I took some beef out of the freezer to thaw and I'll put that in the pressure cooker with onions and seasonings then mix with the beans in a big stock pot. While that cooks, I'll make a pan of cornbread. Glad I was able to send to town for some dry ice. Actually, my BIL and nephew went. They rode a couple of the horses. My nephew stayed outside and watched the horses while my BIL went in to get the ice. He said there wasn't much in the store by way of groceries. There was a big sign near the registers saying "no food sold without ration book". Looks like they are rationing locally now. He said there was no dog food even. He was wanting some for their dogs. I said I'd make extra cornbread. We stocked up on deer corn before leaving Texas. BIL had fussed about how much corn I insisted on. Now he is glad I brought it.

well it is good to see that members are 'role playing' real well on this trip. Also good to see and hear that people are 'making do' and also as you post others can learn how to 'get by'.

So
Why not take it one more step?
Try and eat what we all are 'saying' we are cooking/eating for a few meals (or like us all the time we are 'on the trail' (we hope). That means no eating at McD's or ordering pizza (sorry). Cook at home -try making something from scratch - NOW you don't have to build a fire in your back yard but eat together maybe by candle / lantern light. Wash the dishs by hand (it will be easy as you should be using very few plates for these meals.
How about 1 night sleep on the floor (not on a work day for some) using blankets and quilts for 'pading'.

Go for a walk and 'talk' about what would have happened today if you were on the trail.

DARE I SAY IT ............................
No TV or Video games - play a board game, READ a book, or just talk and sing songs -anything that you would be doing if you really were out there on the wagon train.

Now somehow (I don't get it ) but even without power here the compute still works so I can post and also see what others are doing?

Watchout because You may just have a bit of fun and also learn a thing or two.

Excellent idea, AH! Especially for families to help the children to learn. This is how I normally cook and eat. I also have no dishwasher or washing machine. I'm going to pass on the floor sleeping since I've done more than my fair share of that in a lifetime. LOL I've also cooked a lot on campfires and hobo stoves. Lived off grid and with no running water for years at a stretch. Expect we'll have to do it again sometime. In fact, I wish this were a "reality" instead of "un-reality"!
