Saw this thread and had to bump it. It's easy to get overwhelmed with prepping, especially if you're just starting. Inexpensive ideas of preps to stock up on are a good way to start.
Ordinary stocking up preps:
matches-cheap
spices-I recently organized our spices. Gave me a chance to see what we really do have and what we need. I now have certain spices on the grocery lists for the next few weeks. This can be cheap, too!
dish liquid
batteries-'cause when there's a power outage here and a few days before deer season, the shelves are empty at the stores
Toothbrushes, toothpaste and floss
foil
I would have lost heart, unless I had believed
That I would see the goodness of the Lord
In the land of the living.

(As long as she doesn't hoard it all!)
I like to stock up on lotions/creams/cocoa butter/vaseline/baby oil etc... It is very important to keep your skin in good shape because of the risk of cracking and infections. While I suppose that I could make something using olive oil, I really don't want to start using food preps for non-food uses. I don't mind using them for medicinal purposes (like honey on a wound or an oatmeal bath to help with itching). My family has such dry skin that we need to put something on to protect it and keep it from flaking on a daily basis.

"Look carefully then how you walk, not as unwise but as wise, making the best use of the time, because the days are evil. " Eph 5:15,16
"Do not be afraid because of the words that you have heard" 2 Kings 19:6

Thanks, themartianchick for sharing! But it's not hoarding, it's stocking up!
Everyone else runs to the store to buy their TP whenever there is more than an inch of snow in the forecast . I just buy it in a more economical and organized manner than they do.
Lightbulbsare another good one, too! We've been trying to stock up on those as well because we don't want the new kind.

--unreliable ....LED doesn't have a whatsit wire to burn out
--expensive ....LED sips the bare minimum of electricity
--nonexistant ....LED will do well on any cobbled together, alternate energy source.
Our property manager donated [she used to sell them] two more small ones for a light fixture above the sink that keeps blowing regular bulbs. [closed in area with heating up issues. LED does not produce heat!
Other than they are REALLY expensive and are often producing less light [or oddly colored light] than you expect, there is much to be said for LED.
As far as I know, they do not produce that debilitating affect on people with lupus and other health issues that the flourecent [sp?] lighting does.
There is technology for very powerful light with LEDs.....but did I mention they are EXPENSIVE????

The last time I was in Sam's Club, I noticed a few prep items right around $10 each:
-pack of 5 Colgate Total toothpastes
-box of 3 jugs of Clorox
-25 lbs. of white rice (50 lbs. was about $18)
-2 Listerine mouthwashes (1.5L each)
-a 90oz. jug of Dawn dish liquid--it was less than $10
Sam's is doing those e-values where those with the cheapest membership you get the e-values (instant $ off) for certain products until July 8th. (The higher membership plan normally has these) There were e-values for 2 of the items above:
--the 90 oz. ultra original Dawn $8.28 -$2 off instant savings=$6.28 If I'm doing my math right, that's like 7 cents/oz.
--a pack of 5 Colgate Total toothpastes for $10.88. (I thought it was 9.98 last week
I didn't need either one of these and had bought dish liquid a week or so ago there, but figured, hey, this is a good time to buy those 2 things!
