Don't forget to stock up on rat poison, especially if you store animal feed. Also ant poison, wasp spray etc.

Try using nylon shoelaces. Also, thread a piece of dental floss and weave it through the lace with a neadle along the length of the lace. It takes a tractor to break that stuff! I sew buttons on coats and denim items with it.

:bump1:

Saw this thread and had to bump it. It's easy to get overwhelmed with prepping, especially if you're just starting. Inexpensive ideas of preps to stock up on are a good way to start.

Ordinary stocking up preps:

matches-cheap

spices-I recently organized our spices. Gave me a chance to see what we really do have and what we need. I now have certain spices on the grocery lists for the next few weeks. This can be cheap, too!

dish liquid

batteries-'cause when there's a power outage here and a few days before deer season, the shelves are empty at the stores

Toothbrushes, toothpaste and floss

foil
Psalm 27:13

That I would see the goodness of the Lord
In the land of the living.

Hubby is a smoker and with that comes certain rules....NO SMOKING in the house or car. Yeah I am a real witch about it too. So he has bought an electric cigarette for traveling so I am stocking up on refills. He also uses it in the house when the weather is bad and he cannot go outside.

Another thing is lysol - spray and liquid.

Toilet paper. I buy it every chance I get when there's a decent sale. I have the attitude there's no such thing as too much TP. It's not hoarding because we use it!:cheeky-smiley-067:

 You have to compete with MartianChick for the T.P title tho.... :darlenequeen:

....have just recently convinced DH of the wisdom of grabbing TP on every shopping trip.... We also store phone books... Gives him motivation to remember the TP!

I don't mind sharing the title with Out of the Ordinary! We can be co-Queens!! :darlenequeen: :darlenequeen:
(As long as she doesn't hoard it all!)

I like to stock up on lotions/creams/cocoa butter/vaseline/baby oil etc... It is very important to keep your skin in good shape because of the risk of cracking and infections. While I suppose that I could make something using olive oil, I really don't want to start using food preps for non-food uses. I don't mind using them for medicinal purposes (like honey on a wound or an oatmeal bath to help with itching). My family has such dry skin that we need to put something on to protect it and keep it from flaking on a daily basis.

Don't forget lightbulbs. If there is any electricity available, even if only part of a day, you'll need lightbulbs.
"Have mercy on me, my God, have mercy on me, for in you I take refuge. I will take refuge in the shadow of your wings until the disaster has passed." Ps 57:1

"Look carefully then how you walk, not as unwise but as wise, making the best use of the time, because the days are evil. " Eph 5:15,16

Thanks, themartianchick for sharing! But it's not hoarding, it's stocking up! Posted Image
Everyone else runs to the store to buy their TP whenever there is more than an inch of snow in the forecast . I just buy it in a more economical and organized manner than they do.

Lightbulbsare another good one, too! We've been trying to stock up on those as well because we don't want the new kind.

I'd have to echo the lightbulbs again... As a kid, I stayed up late reading under the covers. Mom would catch me and take away my flashlight. I learned how to make my own flashlights using a small lightbulb, a piece of wire, a battery and some electrical tape. I suppose that I could just buy more flashlights, but eventually, they do break or the bulbs burn out. Making flashlights is something that kids enjoy as a science lesson, too.

I purchased one LED bulb. They are expensive but..... POST- :smiley_shitfan: if our electricity becomes

--unreliable ....LED doesn't have a whatsit wire to burn out :cele:

--expensive ....LED sips the bare minimum of electricity

--nonexistant ....LED will do well on any cobbled together, alternate energy source.

Our property manager donated [she used to sell them] two more small ones for a light fixture above the sink that keeps blowing regular bulbs. [closed in area with heating up issues. LED does not produce heat!

Other than they are REALLY expensive and are often producing less light [or oddly colored light] than you expect, there is much to be said for LED.

As far as I know, they do not produce that debilitating affect on people with lupus and other health issues that the flourecent [sp?] lighting does.

There is technology for very powerful light with LEDs.....but did I mention they are EXPENSIVE????

I like obtaining old and ugly wool coats from Goodwill (the type no one would buy to wear.) I find great 100% wool, which I used as diaper covers when my children were younger. Also, they can be sewn into blankets for great warmth. Everytime we are out, we stock up on matches and dental floss. I try to grab toothbrushes every other trip. I would hate to have dental problems when SHTF

The last time I was in Sam's Club, I noticed a few prep items right around $10 each:

-pack of 5 Colgate Total toothpastes

-box of 3 jugs of Clorox

-25 lbs. of white rice (50 lbs. was about $18)

-2 Listerine mouthwashes (1.5L each)

-a 90oz. jug of Dawn dish liquid--it was less than $10

Sam's is doing those e-values where those with the cheapest membership you get the e-values (instant $ off) for certain products until July 8th. (The higher membership plan normally has these) There were e-values for 2 of the items above:

--the 90 oz. ultra original Dawn $8.28 -$2 off instant savings=$6.28 If I'm doing my math right, that's like 7 cents/oz.

--a pack of 5 Colgate Total toothpastes for $10.88. (I thought it was 9.98 last week :tapfoot: ) Each tube of toothpaste is 7.8 oz. -$3 instant savings= $7.88

I didn't need either one of these and had bought dish liquid a week or so ago there, but figured, hey, this is a good time to buy those 2 things!

Oil for lanterns and also extra wicks
You can get the cheap .98 TP for 6 rolls at Walmart. I plan to buy that for my "stock up" every time I go to Walmart.

I'd like to take $50 to Dollar Tree and use it just for Preps....batteries are $1, food $1...etc.
