My computer came with trial versions of Microsoft Word. I really don't want to buy it. It was suggested that I download Open Office. Anyone have experience with it?

On the second note, do I just delete the Microsoft word programs through my control panel if I download Open Office?

I have only heard good things about it. A lot of folks seem to like it over Word, and it is free. You can delete the trial program if you wish since it does take up space on the hard drive.

I had Open Office on my last machine, and it was just okay. This one has Microsoft Word, and I like it much better. It's just easier for this borderline computer illiterate person to use. And since the lion's share of the world also uses Word, it just makes sharing things a whole lot easier.

I went from Word 97 to Open Office, and it was so awful I had to spring for the new Microsoft Office.

Much of what I do is editing. If you are looking to replace ^p^p with ^p throughout a document (basically getting rid of a blank space between paragraphs) you cannot do it in Open Office. Nor can you search a document by format code (italics, say) in Open Office like you can in Microsoft Office.

Open Office vastly increases the formatting errors that occur when transferring a document from one computer to another.

Unless you toggle the code when you first download Open Office, every document you open becomes an Open Office document even if you open it with Notepad or Wordpad. Yes, this can completely mess up the formatting in the document.

Track Changes? A nightmare when one of you has Open Office.

I use it and it works just fine for me. You need to decide what you will be using it for. If you are going to be merging it with other files or running collaborative works with other people then MS Office would be better. Mostly I just copy/paste how to stuff or recipes from the web then print them out.

No Congress, no President has been strong enough to stand up to the foreign-controlled Federal Reserve Bank.

Thomas Jefferson was concise in his early warning to the American nation, "If the American people ever allow private banks to control the issuance of their currency, first by inflation and then by deflation, the banks and corporations that will grow up around them will deprive the people of all their property until their children will wake up homeless on the continent their fathers conquered."

We used openoffice at our school. For a free program, it is very good.

I was also considering this. So...from what you're saying, I wouldn't be able to open my former MS Word documents if I got Open Office? I write stories, save recipes and other data from here, make inventory lists, have correspondence, etc. I just wanna quit losing all my files and stories when I am forced to change computers.

OTOH....I could "Go Amish" [no disrespect intended at all, btw] I keep threatening. For several months I had no computer at all while my damaged [later declared 'DOA' by the Protection Insurance people] laptop was being looked at and while I waited for a good sale before spending the insurance money. Soooo, I wrote pages and pages and pages of story ....with .5 mechanical pencil [extra erasers] and spiral notebook. Yup, it works. Short of fire or flood, I can't lose that like I keep doing in "computer advancements".

But it really hurts my hand. Makes it numb. Typing keeps my MS impaired fingers mobile, agile, and flexible. And....gotta love that backspace key.

I think my threat to Go Amish is empty frustration speaking....but some days....

Right now, I don't use a lot but when I get documents sent to me or I need to send to someone else it does present problems. I have Microsoft Works Word Processing (came with the computer but not a trail version). Main problem is that I don't want to spring for the Microsoft Office if I can get away from it. I'll have to think on this. Thanks for the opinions.

Mt Rider, you can use it to open Word documents, but unless you toggle the OOO when you first install it, OOO will turn your Word documents into OOO documents as it opens each of them, even if you specifically direct it not to.

When I uninstalled OOO, those documents were destroyed by attempts to open them with Word. I had to reinstall OOO to have it on my computer so I could open OOO documents with Word and save them as Word documents.

OOO also takes much longer than Word to open on my computer.

Hmmm, thanks for the warning.

I'm still hoping that Microsoft would let me re-install the Word program I purchased into the laptop that replaced the destroyed one [less than a year old] but....I ain't holdin' my breath.
