A couple of weeks ago DH saw 5 miniature Hereford calves advertised on Craigslist for a really good price. We called and then made the trip down to NE Missouri to buy them. They are so cute and we just love them. So does our DGS.
Here's a picture of our grandson doing chores with us one morning. The buildings in the background are across the blacktop and where DH and I live. Through the trees you can see the front door. DS and his family live on the side where the calves are.

Those really ARE adorable. I know this is mostly a newish fad but they are actually more practical for a small homestead and the size of these animals (if you want to talk about practicality) are more appropriate for butcher for a small family. It's the same for miniature milk animals. They make great homesteading cows.
The problem is,,,,,they are just too darn cute to butcher them.
I'm envious. Good luck with them.

They are too cute! Are they called dexters or is that a certain miniature breed? DH wants one for a milk cow!

I think the Dexters are just a small breed of bovine. Naturally small. Anyway, those are way too cute! They would be great for a homestead or someone like me who would be uneasy handling a full size cow. Less feed too. I think that is a perfect size.
Blessed are the cracked ~ for they shall let in the light.

Oh my goodness! They are SO cute. Now I need to rethink my "wanting goats" versus miniature mooocows. How much land is necessary for each one. Like around here you need 1/2 acre per grazing animal. Thanks, Reb

How cute! I am glad to see other mini farm animals being bred. The Dexters are a naturally small beef type, bred to thrive in cold, rocky area and eat less desirable forage and thrive on stuff other cattle would not touch. Another 'family farm' bovine is the Jersey, originally bred on the English Island, bred to tolerate being staked out on a halter and line for grazing, rather than being raised in a pasture. They are also known for being extremely gentle and providing richer but less volume of milk for family use. Meat cattle will give milk, just less. might be just the ticket for a family who does not want to deal with 'too much' milk.
