I wanted to ask your prayers for my mom and also to ask you to join me in prayers of Thanksgiving for the 1st responders and the hospital staff and doctors who cared for her today.
My mom fell this morning while doing her laundry, in her kitchen. She just slipped. She crawled from the kitchen to the phone in her living room and called 911. The Monteagle Police Chief and the Grundy EMS folks got there in a big hurry and got inside. They got her to the hospital and x-rays showed a broken hip. My mom is 90.
This was about 8:45 this morning; I was at work some 30 miles up the road. I call every morning about 9 (my planning period) and today a guy answered the phone. Scared me to death, then he identified himself as the Chief of Police, that she had fallen and called 911 and the EMS guys were getting her stabilized. I could hear them in the background and you couldn't ask for kinder guys to help. Wow.
They got her to the hospital and she had surgery at 5 pm tonight. Only took 25 minutes as the break wasn't super severe and they put in a 'nail' and a screw. She was alert and doing better when I left her at 8.
Our Lord is good!

I'm praying for you and your mom. I'm glad you are fairly close to her for help! Please keep us updated. I hope she will be able to stay in her house! She seems so independent. And sweet!

So glad she is OK!

How fortunate you are to have a mom that is so active at the age of 90. I will definitely keep her in my prayers and hope that she heals quickly.

Get her a lifealert necklace or watch type alert for next time. So glad she was able to reach the phone. She's doing great at 90. I hope she mends quickly and feels better very soon and can go home. Hoping you can help her out too.

Lifealert had a lot of trouble when I checked up on the company when considering it for MIL. ADT and other security companies provide the same services and actually provide the service.Get her a lifealert necklace or watch type alert for next time.
The MacKinnon, how is your mother doing?

Her cable company has a service we'll get when she goes home - we'd already decided on that!
It's been a real roller coaster ride since Thursday morning when she fell. She did great during the surgery and was good when I left her that evening. Friday morning she was still alert but tired and sore. I stayed with her from about 10:30 til 1 pm then had to run up to school to get the make up tests to finish my grades for the last 9 weeks. I was gone 2 hours and when I got back, she was confused and disoriented, and frightened. Finally got her sorted out before I had to leave at 6.
I got a call at 6:30 this morning; they'd moved her to ICU because of heart flutters (I forget the clinical term) and when I got there at 8, she was really upset and confused which I'm told is pretty standard for patients her age with this injury. It took about 2 hours for her to calm down and she ate well at lunch. She had her first physical therapy today which was tough but she hung in there and finished and was able to sit up for 2 hours (part of the PT). She dozed off for about 40 minutes and woke up confused but seemed to regain composure quickly.
Plan is to take her back to the regular wing tomorrow. The staff is wonderful to her. The big surprise is that my DD, DSIL and DGD are en route right now from Austin and will be here tomorrow to surprise her so she will get to see Abby
(we'd planned a trip to Austin over Spring Break but that won't happen now). So hopefully she'll have a good night and will be less confused tomorrow!
Thank you for your prayers; I know they help!

Broken bone psychosis is very common, even among young people. Usually worse in the elderly. It is temporary though. Glad she is getting good care.

The doctor had warned us about that so it wasn't a complete surprise and it seems to pass within a couple of hours. Her nurse said it tends to go away once they get home and things settle down although the confusion can persist here and there. Just trying to take it day by day - and almost hour by hour!

Just know that most elderly folks who fall and break a leg bone, typically have another severe fall within 12mo of the original injury. Often rebreaking the same site...Will send up prayer for your Mom and your family.

Mom's in rehab now. Her doctor has told her she can no longer drive and should not live alone, but the doc told her this when things weren't making sense to Mom so I don't think it "took". However, now we are reluctant to tell her what will happen because she may go into a deep depression and 'give up'. She will be in rehab at the hospital for some time, so telling her right now isn't critical and gives DH and me some time to arrange our house to move her in with us. It won't be perfect, but she won't be alone and will be able to have most of her furniture and things with her. The doctor told me she (doctor) will go over this with Mom in the near future, armed with the knowledge that DH and I are "on it" already.
I covet your prayers as we begin to make this transition.

That is good, that you are moving her in with you. Hope she continues to improve.
