I thought of doing this as a way of using food storage each week.Don't get me wrong,we are meat eaters and every meal usually revolves around meat.I read about the foods that will win the war(world war 2) and ways of using less meat, since it has gotten very expensive here I think its a good idea to use less.Todays menu is egg salad sandwiches, carrot sticks, cucumber slices and potato chips. Fridays will be whatever I take out of the freezer, yes meat included,a way to use up older items maybe hidden in the bottom of the freezer.Next Monday will be tomato soup, peanut butter sandwiches and Jello. All of this is in my food storage and that is as far as I've gotten menu wise.

Good ideas. Think I'll get out some jello and fruit today. I have some that needs using. Rest of this Monday will be leftovers.

Love this idea! Can I start on a Tuesday? ;)

Thing is, in those years Catholics still abstained from meat on Fridays. So when that campaign kicked in, did Catholics say "Talk to someone else, we're way ahead of you," or did they do two days? Shoulda asked Grandma about that...

Great thoughts!

I have been helping to deal with a whole lot of wasted food at my Mom's house. Not only did she do all the work of home canning and just never *used* it, she bought canned foods and frozen foods that we just had to throw away because they were so old. (The good stuff we donated to needy individuals when we couldn't use it.)

Her freezer was so bad that I had to thaw it out for a couple of days before I could chip the stuff out. The freezer with her refrigerator was taped shut, and I still don't know how bad that is. Sis said the door wouldn't shut right, so it was filled but *taped*. And apparently never opened again. :shakinghead:

USE what you have stored, ROTATE your foods, and be smart about acting responsibly and reasonably. The money Mom "saved" by buying stuff on sale ended up being a total waste.

And if you have elderly parents, keep an eye on their food habits if you can. I thought Sis was helping since she lived two doors over, but somehow she *knew* things without *helping*. (To be fair, much of that was Mom's stubbornness.) Mom enjoyed eating out and sharing our leftovers, and shouldn't have needed to buy much more.

Definately!

That is something we discussed about the NetGeo Prepper show. How many of those people, who are storing it away for the big day, are using their preps to prevent spoilage?

This past year, we were grateful to God, for having our preps in place. There were periods of time, where meals were from what we had in our preps. Amazing how a change in spices makes the same supply taste different.

Of course you may start on any day you wish, just thought this was a catchy way to remember to USE our storage.

Boy this is so important. I felt shame before the Lord for throwing out so much food last year from my large freezer... the food that were several years old because it was buried and forgotten. :( I do not want a repeat of this ever again.

Good idea, I'm with you all on this.

They did two days! You were not discoraged from doing the extra. Besides, many of the abstinence recipes were so goooood! And BTW we (Catholics) still abstain during lent on all Fridays, and add a fast on Ash Wed and Good Friday...it certainly makes me more grateful the next day for the food.

Yes, I still observe. It irks my not-Catholic husband though- Friday night and he wants to do some grilling "What do you MEAN, you can't have steak tonight?!"

I skipped observance last year due to health issues. It's gonna be a long 40 days (mainly for the reason mentioned above)...on the bright side I have to/get to re-think my cooking routine.

"Dey's uh, shrimp-kabobs, shrimp creole, shrimp gumbo. Pan fried, deep fried, stir-fried. There's pineapple shrimp, lemon shrimp, coconut shrimp, pepper shrimp, shrimp soup, shrimp stew, shrimp salad, shrimp and potatoes, shrimp burger, shrimp sandwich.." </Bubba>

No, I'm not doing six weeks of shrimp. But it's going to be a similar litany with the canned tuna and canned salmon.

Still, we lose sight of how much we are blessed with when we just have to cut back a bit...we have stuff we can cut back on.

so chicken isnt considered fowl instead of plain meat too? I Know I used to eat fish on fridays at school. I don't remember if Dad insisted on no meat Friday nights at supper as he was raised Catholic but didn't practice after he left home.

I already have many meatless days so I can have meat if I have it! lol. :grinning-smiley-044:

If your hubby wants to hassel you about the food, don't say anything about it-just have steak on thursday or saturday and he won't mind the fish on friday.By the way,we ate the new thick cut cod at long john silvers and it was the BEST! The cashier said they weren't sure if they were going to keep it but I hope they do.

When I was growing up we had lots of meatless meals. As a child I didn't realize times were tough for my family. I just thought my parents liked to garden and boy did those fresh vegetables taste good! Tomato and mayonnaise sandwiches and carrot sticks for lunch. Fresh corn on the cobb, green beans, fried potatoes, steamed cabbage, and a biscuit for supper. Mom always let me put some of her homemade strawberry preserves on my biscuit for a touch of sweetness. We also had alot of macaroni and tomatoes, fried squash/zucchini, fried okra, cole slaw, and tomato slices for supper.

It was just the 3 of us so my mom would make a pack of hotdogs stretch for 2 meals. One night we would have baked mac and cheese with cut up hot dogs cooked in and 3 veggie sides and another night would be home made baked beanie wienies. Those were good memories...

How is everyone doing?

I just went through my stock pile of food and now I know what I have. I found a lot of beans and have decide to make bean-dish night as well. It will be a challenge to have bean night and meatless night but it might be fun as well. It's a good way to get myself to enjoy cooking again...trying new things and new ways of doing things. After so many years of cooking, it was getting really boring trying to come up with "what to cook tonight?"

My meatless dinner for last week was spicy tofu soup and rice.

try some meatless tex-mex. many men LOOOOVE tex-mex and if you use a lentil-wheat combo for the beef you have a nearly perfect texture, too. Or you can use TVP in place of meat. Chili, burritos, and nachos hide a multitude of meatless goodies. Italian is another way to go meatless - TVP or lentil pasta sauce. How many men notice what is in (or missing from) lasagna? How about Sausage TVP in cream gravy over biscuits? My husband liked anything in gravy over rice - tomato gravy, white sauce, cheese sauce, honey mustard sauce all 'counted' as gravy, luckily.
Potato salad loaded up with eggs. breakfast casseroles are more of a woman thing, but some men have come to like them. Cream of whatever soups, made nice and thick; some men like potato soups, cheesy soups, etc. Pancake dinner? We had them when I was a child and the budget was low. Grilled meatless sandwiches - oh I forgot, they call them panini now. Chinese egg rolls? My husband loved egg-foo-yung and never noticed what was not in it. Stir fries ditto. Omelets. Meatless...how do I count the ways....?

How is everyone doing on using that food storage? Dig down in that freezer and see whats in the botton as today is Freezer Friday! What have you planned for St.Pats day? Do you stick with Corned Beef and cabbage and Soda Bread or something different? Taste of Home has some good looking foods on their website(taste of home recipes.com) .I liked the looks of the spinach tarts and the leprechaun cookies.
