I'm feeling the need to stock up on more rice ( I think because of CGA's post about TX rice farmers not getting irrigation water) . I'm planning on buying white rice. After leaving it in the freezer for 2 weeks, we usually store it in with oxygen absorbers in mylar bags which are put into buckets (mice are an issue here).

If, after freezing, I store the white rice in canning jars, are oxygen absorbers necessary?

yes. the absorbers make a vacuum to make the jar air-tight. If you just screw things down tight, there is still some air entry (like zip locks) over time. I had some dried foods get moldy on me stored in canning jars with no seal. Rice tends to absorb atmospheric humidity.

After freezing it, I vacuum seal in quart jars then store in my dark pantry. I have never had an issue with any of it.

I have a vacuum sealer with a jar attachment to seal grains and such in mason jars. I don't use oxygen absorbers and have had rice, wheat, etc store well for years.

Thanks! I don't have a vacuum sealer, so I'll just use the oxygen absorbers.

I have discovered that my family loves jasmine rice. Would it store as well as white rice?
