I have a box of toilet paper bought in 1999 sitting on top of a cupboard in my laundry room. The box is 12-4 roll packs or 48 rolls. All I have at the house is 24 double rolls. If I figured right this should equal the same number of rolls, 48.

With the talk of shrinking sizes and increasing prices I decided to do a comparison. Sorry to say I don't have the 1999 price but I can compare the shrinkage.

1999 -- 280 2 ply sheets per roll

2012 -- 242 2 ply sheets per roll

1999 -- 4.5" X 4.4" sheet size

2012 -- 4" X 4" sheet size

In the attached picture each stack is 4 rolls wide and 2 deep. Remember each stack equals 48 rolls.

One more interesting thing. On this 1999 purchase of toilet paper there is NOT one word that isn't English printed anywhere.

*sarcastic edge to my voice* I'm guessing the huge yellow "IMPROVED" doesn't mean for the consumer...? :(

Neat comparison... THANKS!

...and I bet you bought those 'big rolls' during the Johnny Carson SCARE?
Or was that one earlier? I am too old to remember EVERYTHING ya know.
:sHa_sarcasticlol:

Oh , wait You got them for YSK!!!!!!!!!! I just saw the date again - 1999!
Johnny Carson WAS way earlier then that wasn't he.
All he had to say was one line and the shelves cleared out the next day!
Kind of like Oprah did for the Meat guys.
Sorry

In the US, Johnny Carson inadvertently caused a three-week panic when, on December 19, 1973, he read a news item regarding the US government falling behind on bids for toilet paper and quipping that the nation faced a toilet paper shortage on the Tonight Show.

I remember that. That lasted longer than three weeks. Grocery stores refused to sell to teenagers because they were afraid they would waste it to paper trees, and that was in the fall.

I KNEW IT!

I noticed that a while ago when I stacked some old TP in the same space as my new stash, and they didn't fit in the same. The rolls are wider but much shorter.

The new rolls are 'squatt-ier' looking.
Blessed are the cracked ~ for they shall let in the light.

As the reining Toilet Paper Stashing Queen of Mrs. S, I'd like to chime in and thank Wink for the careful research!

One thing that I've noticed is that the cardboard rolls have gotten larger around to fool consumers into believing that the rolls are the same size. My parents stash large quantities of tp and save the rolls for me to use to make firestarters. I recently found a bag of them from a few years ago. When I placed them in the box that houses the others, I realized that the old rolls could now slide inside the newer rolls. Mom is a die-hard Scotts fan so it truly was comparing apples to apples when I pulled out a modern Scotts roll.

Now I feel the urge to go buy some more tp...

They are only going to get smaller, I'm afraid!!! I stock up whenever I find a good deal. In a few years we're gonna be talking about how "big" the rolls of 2012 were!
