Million Preparedness Pledge

The Weather Channel, FEMA, NOAA and the American Red Cross are promoting the first-ever National Severe Weather Preparedness Week April 22-28 to engage consumers to be proactive about their severe weather preparedness plans.

The goal of the Million Preparedness Pledge is to inspire 1 million people to commit to be prepared before a weather emergency.

The pledge asks consumers to talk to their families and be prepared by committing to one or more of the following actions:

  • Learn the definitions of a watch and warning
  • Learn what to do if a watch or warning is issued
  • Have a NOAA weather radio
  • Sign up for The Weather Channel alerts and apps
  • Create an emergency supply kit (or update existing kit)
  • Create an emergency plan (or update existing plan)
  • Volunteer, attend preparedness training or host a preparedness event in my community
Print and sign your commitment to being prepared for a severe weather emergency.

To help prepare your plan, build your kit or purchase preparedness supplies, visit www.redcross.org to to learn what resources are available.

More information about storm threats and preparation can be found at www.ready.gov/severeweather or www.nws.noaa.gov/com/weatherreadynation/.

Very timely info. Tornado season here is May through July. Although storms and tornadoes can happen anytime. I need a new windup radio for the basement.

As ready as can be, seeing I live in a tin mansion with no cellar. Is weather channel TV? Don't have one. Don't drive so can't do community preparedness stuff.

Let me adjust my tinfoil before responding...

I swear that I am all for preparedness...but why do I need to print and sign my preparedness commitment? Will I become just another pushpin on a map that indicates where goods can be commandeered?

That being said, the government probably already knows what I've got since I've done most of the Free FEMA classes online. They have my email address, my physical address and the correct spelling of my name since that is required for them to have issued the certificates to me.

All the tinfoil in the world isn't gonna keep them from knowing that I am into preparedness, but it may help some of you! I do think that the idea of making an event out of this is wonderful, but I don't advise signing and submitting anything!

It gives us all an excuse to talk about it with sheeple without appearing to be fringe-y. I tend to use weather-related disasters and quakes as prime reasons to prep. The recent tornado activity has been a good teaching tool (No disrespect to anyone that may have been affected by those tornadoes) for those that think that weather disasters can't happen to them. I made several phone calls during the outbreak, telling relatives to turn to the Weather Channel to watch the coverage. I went on and on saying things like, 'It just breaks my heart to see all of those people who have lost everything!'

CGA- There are free FEMA Courses available online. There may be a way to get the materials without actually registering for the classes. I seem to recall downloading some of them as PDF's awhile back. I would read through them when I had time and then take the exam. I distinctly recall printing some of them out, too.

Here is the link to the courses that are offered:

http://training.fema...st.asp?page=all

There is even a way to receive college credit for them (usually worth a 1/4 -1 credit each) from an affiliated community college. Of course, you must complete the registration with FEMA so that the government can keep track of the credits that you've received.

seeing we also don't have a TV, I get the weather.com from my computer. Good for day to day weather forcasting but of late nobody has gotten it right with all the weird weather we have been having around here. You have to check more like hour by hour! :sHa_sarcasticlol:

I don't sign anything or send in anything either, but I didn't see where you were supposed to send it. Print it and sign it then what?

Oh well, I'm not going to do it anyway. Guess I'm just typing to hear myself click tonight. Too much caffeine in my sweet tea I'm thinking. :bev:

That's not sweet tea, Jeepers! That looks like a glass of my refreshing adult summer beverage. I should go look for that recipe for jelly made with liquor that was talked about awhile back...mmmmm....

I have that recipe TMC! Still have not done it.... this one uses an orange though and various colored jello, it turns out pretty neat, makes a very adult snack however, :grinning-smiley-044:

Jeepers I have had to really limit my caffeine intake as I get older. That just stinks but it lasts too long in my system and keeps me up way too long too often.

I drink one good cup of coffee when I get up , and use decaf tea or maybe one big regular tea with caffeine in it during a whole afternoon by making it in a quart jar and drinking that, if its not decaf.

* and I have run out of teabags with decaf again!

gone are the days where I can go through a drive through coffee hut and get a triple expresso latte mocha or whatever they called it, lol.
Tea made at home is also far more frugal.
And there are no coffee huts here.... But that would be a good business for someone to do here I think, lol.

I think more folks in my region, after two major flood situations and historical snow fall the year before do try to be prepared better now for that, even if its only short term up to a month maybe? Although some Vermonters were cut off with the road damage due to Hurricane Irene up to 4 months.

that is only if they are fairly frugal anyhow. Already.

I am hoping my son and his wife have gotten a kit together again for themselves and he certainly grew up with a months worth of basic foods in our household and knows how to use camping gear if need be.

One can only say so much and then has to just hope they are set up. :mornincoffee:
