Congratulations, homesteader. What a wonderful new adventure God has planned for you and DH. May HE bless your new home and make it a place of rest and peace.
Trust in the LORD with all your heart and lean not on your own understanding,
in all of your ways acknowledge HIM and HE will make your paths straight.
Proverbs 3:5-6

You don't have to have a mortgage to have a homestead exemption on taxes.
"Have mercy on me, my God, have mercy on me, for in you I take refuge. I will take refuge in the shadow of your wings until the disaster has passed." Ps 57:1
"Look carefully then how you walk, not as unwise but as wise, making the best use of the time, because the days are evil. " Eph 5:15,16
"Do not be afraid because of the words that you have heard" 2 Kings 19:6

Have you hugged your goose today?

We paid cash for our place and the guys from the real estate and title companies said that we would qualify for the homestead credit. They said to wait a month before heading to Goshen to give them the documents.
DH has been really busy around the place. He got the refrig scrubbed and put back together. He had even dismantled all the side panels because of all the bacteria he didn't want in our future lives.
We think we'll be able to salvage the gas stove, dishwasher, and microwave too. That's about $2,500 less that we have to spend on appliances. It's so nice being married to a handyman.
We made our first trip over to the cemetery in the garden tractor and wagon. They don't mind us taking the soil that doesn't go back in the plots due to the size of the caskets. We have some great soil and compost that is now in various pots on our back deck. I'm hoping to plant a bunch of herb plants in them tomorrow. The deck is right off the kitchen so my herb garden is finally becoming a reality.
Since we've been helping the widow clean out the place the past 5 months, it already feels like home. We have loved her dearly over the years and can see her in every room, enjoying herself the 40 years she lived here. When I visit her at the nursing home throughout the week, she's enjoying the stories about the elbow grease we're applying to the place and how much we love it.
We're hoping she will live long enough to see it remodeled and reskinned. It probably won't be until next year.
