One way we find out what God has planned in our retirement years is to get the boat moving. We've been praying and waiting to see if we should stay in Indiana, move back to Cheeseland, or find another ministry to work for after DH retired on Oct. 1st. I think missionaries are the most confused sometimes because there is so much ministry EVERYWHERE.

DH always says that the boat cannot be steered by the rudder unless it is moving (he worked at a marina as a teen), so we have felt led to bid on the house across the street. We've been helping the widow who lived there to liquidate her assets so she can qualify for Medicaid (another story :sad-smiley-012: ). We've dealt with her hoarding tendencies and have survived the past 5 months cleaning out her house and selling what she doesn't need. :darlenedance:

There is no way to describe the condition of the house, but we're willing to roll up our sleeves and spend our retirement years getting it back into shape. No one knows the place better than we do as we've walked and cleaned every square inch. DH has also fixed many of the HVAC components, lights, pumps, etc. in hopes she would return to her home.

The best part is that the property is one acre and has a cemetery on two sides (quiet neighbors), in the county (small animals allowed) and it's right across the street from us. Too bad we sold all our tools and remodeling equipment 11 years ago when we hit the mission field. :whistling:

Even if we don't win the bid tomorrow, we'll continue to care for the widow and enjoy her quirky personality for as long as we're here. :wink (2): If we do win the bid, she can watch us bring it back to the condition it was before her husband died so many years ago. :woohoo:

Looks like a neat house.

I hope you get it! And to already be familiar with it must be a plus!!!!

Good luck on the bid.

The house looks like the first one we bought in Indiana! It had 1 acre too. Our neighbors were vertical though.
Blessed are the cracked ~ for they shall let in the light.

We are now the proud owners of a handyman special. :darlenedance:

Thankfully we were the highest bidder and the widow is extremely happy. We're very satisfied with the end result as it sold for about 1/3rd what the property is taxed at. We will be visiting the county tax man right after we get our bearings and figure out what we've done today. :knary:

DH wants to power wash the inside and I'd like to :dusting: . We will have to meet somewhere in between. I'm not sure how much planting I'll do on the acre of land this year, but may get some perennials in so they have all summer to get established.

So much to do. I think we'll sit on our rental porch across the street, drink some lemonade, and talk about a one-year plan of restoring the place.

Congratulations! Well, thinking of how to manage to do it all is a start, first things first.
I know hot water and bleach and a clean sponge mop or two can do wonders for walls. And you don't have to go and mop up what a pressure washing would do inside, lol!

*Congratulations*!!! :bouquet:

When you go to the assessor's office, take your paperwork in, the professional's assessment of value, etc. You will try to have the taxable value lowered. It doesn't take effect until the next year's taxes, as far as I can tell. It might be different with a new home sale.

MAKE SURE YOU FOLLOW IT ALL THE WAY THROUGH... you may not know until the next year if it's been done correctly *for sure*. :(

My sister filed everything in time to have both of Mom's houses taxable value lowered this by spring. Both houses were taxed at *3 times* their actual value again *this* year. My unemployed brother had to go ahead and pay the spring taxes, but hopefully it will get changed and he will either have a credit or get money back.

Same county as yours. As with every governmental office, you have to watch them. :(

Will the current owner be invited to live her remaining years out there?
Hoping so and hoping you get the house.

Edit to add: CONGRATULATIONS : )

Thanks everyone for the 'congratulations'. We will watch the accessor's office, Cat, thanks for the head's up. I'm sure they don't want to decrease any land values as there are so many foreclosed houses in the area.

The widow will probably live out her remaining years (months) in the nursing home. She is unable to do much of anything for herself anymore. I do take her shopping in her wheelchair and take her past her house each time. She always hated the split-level layout of the place and said her husband bought it 35 years ago without her permission. She's still spunky! :grinning-smiley-044:

Yesterday, I planted her favorite climbing rose in front of her place. The trellis has been there for decades but her husband didn't want flowers there. She now has what she always wanted. :cheeky-smiley-067:

Closing is Friday afternoon. I'm not sure we're excited. Maybe more relieved that we finally made a choice on which state to live in for awhile. I told my mom last night and the silence could have split the night. :shakinghead: I guess she's not too happy that my pillow won't be landing in my home state of Wisconsin. :frying pan:

I'm not too sure how much planting we will be doing on the one acre this year. We have to make the house livable that that will take months of our time. I certainly won't have time to can/freeze anything even if it grows well, which I doubt because of our sandy soil. I am still planting my garden at our rental across the street from our new place so we'll have plenty to eat from the well-composted soil. Too bad I can't drag the garden plot across the street to our new place. :sHa_sarcasticlol:

It would be nice to plant some fruit trees and bushes but we haven't begun to layout the landscaping scheme. I don't want to plant everything twice. :whistling:

I'm looking forward to my first cup of coffee on the back deck, overlooking the woods. There's nothing quite like a wren singing his lungs out in the early morning. Sure beats listening to a rooster. :wink (2):
