It's time for the 1st cutting. We usually do it the 1st weekend in June but this year is early.

Have you ever smelled a freshly mown hay field? Have you ever walked into a barn in the winter and smelled the summers hay up in the haymow? Actually, we make the big round bales now so the smell isn't in the haymow but I can remember the days!!! :)

No? Oh, I wish you could!!! It's one of my very favorite smells.

Yep, haying on the farm.....it's a lot of hard, hot, dirty work but the livestock love it all winter long and I love the smell of it for months and months.

I sure do. It takes me back to playing on my aunt and uncle's farm in the summer when I was a kid. One week my uncle would have all the boy cousins out to the farm and the next week my aunt would have us girl cousins. The rest of the year she rested up. I JUST NOW figured out why the girls came out after the boys...clean up crew from the boys. We had a lot of cookouts and family reunions there too.

I love the smell of new mown (new 'moan' as we used to call it) hay. Then I get weezy and stuffy and sneezy and that's the end of that.

Being a Hoosier it also reminds me of a song:

There's A Little Red Barn On A Farm Down In Indiana.

1. I was born 'way down in Indiana, Wish that I were there right now. Want to hear my dog bow-wow When I go to milk the cow. Raised on corn 'way down in Indiana, So was ev'ry little hen. I was mighty happy then; Wish that I were back a-gain:

CHORUS: In a little red barn on a farm down in Indiana, Let me lay my back on a stack of new mown hay. 'Round the barnyard where the farmyard folks are pally, Let me dilly-dally all the live-long day. I'm a Hoosier who's blue, thru and thru, and my heart is pining For the sycamore trees where the Wabash breezes play. What's more, I'm pining for a yellow moon that's shining On a little red barn on a farm down Indiana way.

2. Work was done 'way down in Indiana, Picked the eggs the chickens lay; Pushed the plow and pitched the hay; Ev'ry day a busy day. Had my fun 'way down in Indiana When the sun would go to rest. Saw it sinkin' in the West; That's the time I liked the best.

You can't always get what you want, babe

But if you try sometimes, you just might find

You get what you need.

That's funny I was just thinking about that song the other day.
A radio station played it every day when I was on my way to school. It was a long time ago but I think it was the theme song for the morning show.

Some of the farmers around here got the first cutting done about a month ago. I thought it was early.

I can smell the memories, LOL, and enjoy going out to the fields at harvest time.

First cutting starts at the Amish Farm I help out at tomorrow but it looks like I will be helping out with the plantings instead. Fields are very dry as we have not had rain for a bit and none in near days. Here at home same thing and I have to go out and water by hand (wateringcans) each morning before heading out.
