Is It Dry Where You Live Too?

Our spring has been too dry also. We did have 4 or 5 days of drizzle but we NEED more than drizzle. We don't irrigate, Mother Nature does her thing but this year she's taking time off or something.
The pond in the picture should be full at this time of year. I think you can see the banks in the following picture. How about the rest of you...normal, wet or dry?
Every year, at least once, this whole pasture that you see in this picture, plus way more that's not in the picture floods. Last year it didn't flood once, not even close, nor has it this year. It's really rather scary!

On the flip side, being able to raise the hay for the animals was severely compromised. Last year we had a really dry spring and summer and while we weren't has hard hit as Texas and other areas, most people around here only got 1 cutting from their hay fields. This year we seem a little more balanced. We go a couple of weeks without rain and then we have a week of rain. Consequently I watch my pond go down a little and then back up.
We all know that water is critical to survival but it's a whole different ballgame when we actually go through a period of time where that is threatened.

"One day, we’re going to stand before the gates of Heaven. Some of us want to be able to walk up there in a white robe and we want to sing Abba Father and Amazing Grace and we want to say to the Lord, “I worshiped You.” But I want you to think about this: Heres the way I want to enter the gates of Heaven. I want to come skidding in there on all fours. I want to be slipping and sliding and I want to hit the gates of heaven with a bang. And when I stand up and I stand before Christ, I want there to be blood on my knees and my elbows. I want to be covered with mud. And I want to be standing there with a ragged breast plate of righteousness. And a spear in my hand. And I want to say, “Look at me, Jesus. I’ve been in the battle. I’ve been fighting for you.” Ladies and gentlemen, put your armor on and get into battle. God bless you." ~ General William G. Boykin, U.S. Army (ret.)

Even with irrigation, the farmers fields look scant.
Here at the house, it takes slow watering each plant every other day to keep them alive.
We have seen an enormous variety and quantity of birds coming in to get water. We have to re-fill their dishes at least 2 times a day.
Yesterday, we topped 109 degrees again.

It's still too early for us to say if it is dry here yet but we did not have much snow fall or any spring rains to amount to much. Come to think of it, no storms yet either. The few showers we did have were short. So, we could be in for a dry year.

I hope not! You had enough of that fear last year.We had enough rain over winter and spring to push the weeds high and thick. Now they are drying out. I think fire danger is going to be very very high this summer.

Good for those that are making hay and need to cut it, but bad for those who put in corn and nothing yet?
Here at the Homestead the rain barrrels are just about empty and I am having to still hand water each day to keep things in the ground growing. Having hot dry weather is not helping things grow this early in the vegetable gardens.
WE need some rain BAD!

I'm trying to keep the grass around the house green. That is about all I can do.

We had a VERY mild winter last year. Above average temps, but we did have rain-- I remember being soooooo SICK of the MUD!! We had very little snow--there wasn't one day that I couldn't push the wheelbarrow down to the back pens to feed.
We had a nice spring. Broke heat records for March, but still had rain. April was chilly. May dried up. They're saying this El Nino/La Nina (??) system will switch and this fall we'll get hit. Lake Michigan's temp is way above normal, so this winter looking for a rough one.

...there are some things that can beat smartness and foresight. Awkwardness and stupidity can. The best swordsman in the world doesn't need to fear the second best swordsman in the world; no, the person for him to be afraid of is some ignorant antagonist who has never had a sword in his hand before; he doesn't do the thing he ought to do, and so the expert isn't prepared for him.

There are jet stream differences and the westerly winds ( Out of Africa) that usually bring moisture to the Gulf to the South are too dry, anything generated there never lasts long enough to get to the Carribean area and then northward. The jet stream over our continent has been flatlined then the solar flare activity, which made things go really up and down vertically over the US and probably other places in the world too made it go hot and cold and if you watch weather radar you see how storms are moving in the eastern US in odd patterns or just not forming up in the larger masses we are used to this summer and going along traditional paths for the most part.
This of course has been a heck of a result. And yea the earth has changed its axis, it started back in 2009. It does that every so many cycles in time I guess. It is still shifting and I think that may play in somehow with the various weather differences we are seeing too. That is a lot of natural factors way bigger than human affects. How we manage now is how good we can adapt to the rapid changes. On one level it fascinates me but its remarkable how much it damages what we have tried to do for ourselves matter of factly for centuries.
So far.
At this point its like you have to be prepared for anything , any season until things normalize if they are going to. There are other factors but it had little to with us wee humans I think, I just think its some part of a larger cycle for our planet. Unfortunately we live on the clock and through mere seasons and 365 day years and are used to that concept , so we plan and do things accordingly. Ive been following El Nino stuff for about 23 yrs now as NW California was always affected by it with the rain cycles and thats where I learned about it but since I left there , things really started to change more drastically all over.
I was just glad it rained some yesterday here which I think surprised everyone. It didn't last long and we are dry but not drought level just yet. I still don't know if our regional crops are going to be ok. We already had two summers of excessive rain and floods in massive proportions last year, twice but yea we need the rain.... I feel badly for all who are in tremendous drought and loss of crops and hay and feed and food because it affects them who do all this for the nation and world and it affects all of us and we need to take care how we manage things so we can simply keep feeding our families and keep what we got in our own possession for stabilities sake and maybe change how we do things. Like hand wash dishes in less than 5 gallons water total. Think how you do that in a little camper sink, or a small dishpan, and a pot of hot water to rinse them. heating the water on the stove or fire pit for instance. It takes readjusting our thinking caps. Same thing with those trying to save their gardens in hot places. Get up early and go out late with saved household water or figure out frugal hose use if you are allowed to water. Water tables are going down all over and there will probably be more restrictions in many places because 3 seasons out of four basically dry usually does that. So realize you need to adjust how you think and find solutions that are adequate. Whether we get alot of snow or not, it could depend on micro climate areas because of all the other factors , not just one oceans current. Just have to adjust to whatever happens where you are.
It was mostly like late fall here instead of a fairly normal level winter, warmer, dryer by far, very little precip . The biggest snow was supposed to hit but veered east faster than expected, but it nailed downstate, first off.
My roof didnt get repaired til about 10 days after that and it had been ruined the previous winter when we had record snowfalls, the worst we had ever had since white men first settled pre revolutionary times here. I was very upset about that roof, it was bad. It all pooled right there and got so it just streamed through, gallons I had to monitor when the snow melted under neath due to building warmth and then with all the heavy rains. I could not even go anywhere for a night or two last year. I was dammmed tired of it too. Very unsat on the landlady's and owners part. I was too weak and ill to climb a ladder on my own mostly with some flexseal if I could have gotten that in town and patch it some and they never bothered , they didnt even tarp it for me.
So as I continue to see crisis weather events and other things escalating, and now we know the crop losses are happening, I just try to get ready. If my VA disability comes through in a big way, or even half total it could be that would be a huge help to me and I will be applying that to straighten out things and get better settled in a better place as soon as that is feasible and I've looked into that so I can make better choices. I am tired at being at the mercy of others and if I can get independent and build some little place of my own and make it sturdy and weather proof and such things and more convenient and garden and such, thats all I want to do and further south than this horrendous northern winter area. The economics had already been bad before the recessions hit and I don't care for the politics in this state. Although there are a lot of good solid folks here, there are too many who control what happens that don't care about that stuff. Taxes are still insane. And I run into too many incompetent medical people around here and I need better care available in whatever locale I go to so I can maintain my health reasonably instead of let it get as bad as I did because I only gained mistrust as a result and am trying to get that dealt with now. Luckily the VAMC here is changing its stripes too and that is alot of the help so I am working on that. Its part of my preps for life itself. But I will keep my boundaries on other entities and am finding other ways to get things done and I have some good counsel on that and my ideas are sound they tell me. So I am finding ways to get things done now instead of remained stalled in my life.
And I think Dec 21, 2012 will pass by just like any other day lately too, lol. There is no conciousness raising going on, quite the opposite. People are more and more savage I think and I think its right to protect ourselves. I think we have to be personally innovative with our individual situations and bring our family members into such changes and disciplines and practices. A little extra chores and consideration for everyone else never hurt anyone. Later on they will probably thank you. Because you will have when others don't because they remained foolish if its possible to keep it.
