Hey Homeschooling Moms....................................
OK, I don't know IF this has been 'talked' about here yet but-

I just read in the local newspaper that, for New York anyway, the deadline to sign up to Homeschool is July 1st!
And that is coming up FAST!
Seems you have to do that and then they send you out forms to fill in and get back before Aug. 15 or else you will be sending your kids to school no matter what you had planed to do.

Is it like this in all states?
If so then if you were on the fence about homeschooling NOW is the time to decide.

As one that was 'part-time' Homeschooled in the early 60's and had to fight with the schools about it, boy do I have stories for that.

In Louisiana you just have to let them know before school starts that you have a private homeschool and how many students. There's a independent study route, that requires a little more paperwork, but I don't think there's a deadline. Most people only go that route for Jr and Sr years if they do high school so they will qualify for TOPS which is a program where the state pays for college. If you decide in the middle of the year to homeschool, I think you have 30 days to get the info in. Sounds like New York is trying to cut homeschool rosters.

In California you file a private school affidavit by October 15. But you can pull your child out anytime during the school year. You just need to let the current school know what school they will be going to...and it can be the name you create for your private school.

In Pennsylvania, the deadline for current homeschoolers is August 1st. First time homeschoolers can begin at any time during the year, just notify the school, submit the affidavit and objectives.

I try to get my paperwork for the new year submitted when I hand in my son's portfolio for the ending year, so I can begin to log days any time starting July 1st. (The homeschool year in Pa. can begin July 1 and must be completed and paperwork submitted no later than June 30th.)
