They will be some softer, but I don't know just how soft. When they get to a certain point they will never get soft.

It is fine to freeze meats, thaw, then can them.
I can, you can, too !

Try freezing the beans after cooking then thaw and cook again.

I am not thinking that there is going to be a situation where there is no food unless this goes on for a long long time. We have several things going for us that they didn't have during the Dust Bowl. Firstly, nobody really knew how bad the drought was back then except the people that were living on those farms. There wasn't the communication network that we have now. Also there weren't all of the imports going on from other countries like we are doing in this day and age. What I really expect is that the average person won't be able to afford food. It will be so expensive that only the very rich will have what they want until such a time that this would go on until there are real shortages world wide. Even now, canned meats come from Brazil, lamb from New Zealand and Australia, pork from Canada, the veggies and fruits in the store are from Chile, Guatamala, Mexico and so forth. As long as we have the money to purchase from other countries there will be food. On the other hand---other countries are having problems of their own and that could cause shortages. Already the drought is causing unemployment problems with migrant workers, harvesting crews, farmers that don't have money to spend to buy supplies and equipment and it trickles down and affects us all. It will cause another recession if it doesn't rain. There is nothing that anybody can do about that. Obama can't make it rain and neither can Romney!
