    DECORATING ON A DIME

You know Nana , Cappy has been talking about this blown in insulation and it sounds alot easier than tearing down and rebuilding. With your tips about Homer, plus ( which I did not know about Homer so kudo's to your tip) I will know what to ask and look for. Cappy would just rather get things done and not ask questions on prices and free rentals but not me.. I grill salespeople like a drillsargent. My brother-in-law is the store manager at Lowes Home Improvement and we were buying a few things and using his employee discount but I have found that Lowes prices are high unless you come across a sale. I have been anxious to get to Home Depot anyway so this will give me the opportunity to get there and get the sales. Do you have blown in Insulation Nana and if so how are your heating bills during the winter? I am hesitant to turn on my heat as we are not even through Sept yet but the mornings have been colder than usual and I am so tempted. I just don't want big heating bills this year, at least not like last year.
  7. I am glued to the set during BB- Survivor and Amazing Race... I had that feeling that Alison would vote off Erika last night and like you I wanted her to stay. It will be interesting to see what happens now...until the ousted house members vote for the winner is it next week or in two weeks. I can't wait for Survivor to start . Amazing race was great too. Theres a new reality show coming to one of the cable channels about two sets of people building houses.. This should be interesting. I don't know if its on HGTV or Lifetime. I just can't get into American Idol that everyone is crazy about. My mother and sisters are big fans of that show. One thing that I have noticed is that Big Brother has gotten more sexually explicit and language wise is becoming as bad as watching the Osbournes and hearing all the bleeping going on to edit all profanity. I guess thats what gives the stations their ratings. I can do without all the smut. Theres enough of it on other shows.....
  8. I never had fried apples Joan but this weekend we are going apple picking and I will have to try them when we get home.. Can you share your recipe for the Fried Apples?
  9. This is a topic that touches the heart... I am a soup person and weould prefer a nice bowl of veggie-bean soup with a salad and a big hunk of unsliced bread with a pat of butter on the side. My soup pot has been active since the end of August ( although I think Cappys getting tired of soup) I have been chowing down on vegetable-bean and barley soup which is so think its almost like a stew. I found out that they serve this type of fare at The Moosewood Cafe in Ithaca NY which is famous for its veggie fare and its cookbooks which have received world wide acclaim. Cappy took me there for my birthday a couple weeks ago and I ate till the pot was empty. Have you heard of the Moosewood Lowie? I am definately a soup person.

    DECORATING ON A DIME

Nana How about a decorating on a dime forum if Darlene can put it in... You really give me hope because I see how much work we have to do on this house...and know there is a light at the end of the tunnel. This house has very little insulation and I don't want another winter of high heat bills with it still cold in here. Cappys off on vacation in Oct for two weeks so I am hoping we can tear down living room walls, insulate and get walls back up and painted before the holidays. Thanks for posting on the improvements to your home...so far we have painted and repaired the outside siding of our house and by slapping on some shutters, landscaping the front yard with lots of flowers and plants inside fieldstone circles the whole place looks like a totally different home. We spent about 200 do do the outside and that included paint and shutters and new brass outdoor lighting... I borrowed a book of masonery from the library to put in a stone patio out back but I don't think it will get done this year. I also added personal touches to the outside such as summer themed flag, welcome wreaths and lots of bird feeders situated in different trees around the area and birdbath for the birdies. We also planted some dwarf pines that will only grow about 6 feet.
  12. Hey Gals would you believe a nun who is a relative sent me that in an e-mail. I almost died....

  14. Why Lowie............belated one day HAppy Birthday to you... so how does it feel to be 21? I am still celebrating from my birthday so I will carry over the party and celebrate for you and me both.
  15. Got a letter from my Grandma the other day. She writes... The other day I went up to a local Christian bookstore and saw a "honk if you love Jesus" bumper sticker. I was feeling particularly sassy that day because I had just come from a thrilling choir performance, followed by a thunderous prayer meeting, so I bought the sticker and put it on my bumper. Boy, I'm glad I did! What an uplifting experience followed! I was stopped at a red light at a busy intersection, just lost in thought about the Lord and how good He is...and I didn't notice that the light had changed. It is a good thing someone else loves Jesus because if he hadn't honked, I'd never have noticed! I found that LOTS of people love Jesus! While I was sitting there, the guy behind started honking like crazy, and then he leaned out of his window and screamed, "For the love of GOD! GO! GO! Jesus Christ, GO!" What an exuberant cheerleader he was for Jesus! Everyone started honking! I just leaned out of my window and started waving and smiling at all these loving people. I even honked my horn a few times to share in the love! There must have been a man from Florida back there because I heard him yelling something about a "sunny beach"... I saw another guy waving in a funny way with only his middle finger stuck up in the air. I asked my teenage grandson in the back seat what that meant, he said that it was probably a Hawaiian good luck sign or something. Well, I've never met anyone from Hawaii, so I leaned out the window and gave him the good luck sign back. My grandson burst out laughing ... he was enjoying this religious experience, too! A couple of the people were so caught up in the joy of the moment that they got out of their cars and started walking towards me. I bet they wanted to pray or ask what church I attended, but this is when I noticed the light had changed. So, I waved to all my sisters and brothers grinning, and drove on through the intersection. I noticed I was the only car that got through the intersection before the light changed again. I felt kind of sad that I had to leave them after all the love we had shared, so I slowed the car down, leaned out of the window and gave them all the Hawaiian good luck sign one last time as I drove away. Praise the Lord for such wonderful folks! Grandma

    Check in...

Its been sheer lunacy here and I have hardly been home. Most of you know my auntie passed away a few weeks ago, well I am taking care of her business which has me out of town and when I am in town I am at school meetings and trying to get a syllabus printed for the classes I will teach this semester. Also my Aunt Doro was rushed to the hospital the other day with congestive heart failure and she has diabetes and has an open wound on her leg which continues to grow so the doctors are talking amputation which has my cousin in a tizzy. My oldest brother had kidney surgery 2 months ago and is not doing very well and has been gravely ill. The surgeon forgot to take out one kidney stone and it exploded so he has a nasty infection which he can't get rid of and is on his 7th antibiotic since the infection started. Keep him and his family in your prayers. I thought when my sister called me about my Aunt Doro she was calling to tell me our brother passed away..thats how bad a shape he is in. I will be glad when this year is over... I will try to post freebies for you all three times a week if I can so keep checking in the forum and I have to tell you the Old Wives Tale contest is coming along well. There are many great tales posted there. Coming in October I am going to have some kind of contest going in the Old Wood Stove Forum where you can win a cash prize to buy your Thanksgiving Dinner in November with or at least some of the dinner... Stay tuned for that Contest.

  22. When my daughter was in grade school I use to take a clean egg carton and fill the slots that use to hold the eggs with small bites of dried fruits, meats, cheeses, nuts, diced vegetables and fruits, crackers and chips to have a little lunchroom buffet. The other kids thought it was neat and started to bring their lunches in empty egg cartons too!

  25. Lowie I have half the top done for a Queen Size bed and I am adding fabric that I have too. I have done some stitching by machine and some by hand. During these busy times it relaxes me to sew by hand. I would love to see what your quilt looks like. I am trying to get mine done before winter sets in.
