  4. Save all plastic containers such as margarine containers to store leftovers, freeze leftovers, use for storage of any kind. I use margarine tubs for storing some of my sewing items such as threads, buttons, scissors. Along time ago I bought sticky shelf paper but never used it so I took it, cut it to fit the plastic containers and now have pretty decorative containers sitting on my craft shelves. There's so many uses for this type of container. For kids small toys For Nails and screws How about all those nailpolish bottles cosmetics foodstuffs such as rice, pastas, just about anything you can think of. These containers are money savers.
  5. Since its my grocery shopping day this evening I think instead of buying a meal while out I am going to make a simple but filling meal for this evening when we get home. Here goes: Turkey Sloppy Joes made with 2 lbs of Ground Turkey from Aldi's grocery store. - 1 lb costs 59 cents. 1 can of Aldi Sloppy Joe Mix- 59 cents Carrots and Celery Sticks- both 49 cent a bag at Aldi's Left over Keiser Rolls Lemonade Leftover Brownies and peaches from yesterday. Estimated total cost of meal per person- 1.02 cents I am making the sloppy joes in the crockpot so they can simmer all day long. I also made extra for another meal at another time.
  6. Oh My this is decadent..... Mr. Reci will love this pie. I can only salivate at the thought of all this delectable rich tasting dessert! Tonight is grocery shopping night. Now you know what ingredience I will be buying. I hope this comes out as good as yours Cat...
  7. This year I am really focusing on healthier meals for us while saving money on groceries. I started going to stores a few years ago, like Aldi's and Sav-A-Lot besides Sam's Club for good bargins. I am also using up stock that I have had for over a year and am putting new stock in a different location. I go to the dollar stores to get brand name deodorants, bath powders, soaps, toothpastes, shampoos and conditioners and things like toothbrushes and other toiletries. Usually during the springtime the dollar stores put their boxes of tissues on sale for 3 for 1.00 and I buy a case which last us most of the year. I buy toilet paper by the case 2x a year and when I go shopping I buy an extra dish liquid that I use if its on sale and stick it away in the back of the cupboard. That beef roast that we have had 8 meals out of so far cost me 5.99 for a 14 lb sirloin roast after I used the store coupon of half off on a beef sale. I buy meat and other items at buy one get one or two free items.. I make sure that the price of the meat does not go over 1.99 a lb. I use coupons also but you can save money without using them. The only night we buy something to eat in or eat out is on Wednesdays our grocery shopping days. We don't spend alot either. On weekends we have started to go out to the discount 1.50 cent movies at the discount movie theaters and I bring snacks and sodas for us from home. We take in free concerts and we are volunteer seaters for Broadway Theater Shows from NY City, for our local opera and our local pops and symphony orchestras. At our local university I will be seating people while getting a free seat to see Hamlet this spring. We volunteer our services to the local observatory so we get to use the telescopes and other items for use there. Our church groups go on little trips to zoos or baseball games in NYC . Collections paying. There is so much to get involved in and see for free. I declare this Year of the Freebies and Money Savers! Let us know how you are saving money and enjoying yourself at the same time.
  8. Thats a really good meal Cat and inexpensive too! You don't have to count the pie...LOL. Debbielee thats a good meal also except for the latter parts that you mentioned.
  9. Beef Barley Vegetable Soup with tons of large chunks of veggies from summer and fall harvest. Some crusty bread to dip into the soup. For dessert some chilled peaches. For Mr. Reci, Peaches and he has been a good boy so I made him some chocolate nut fudge brownies which he will have with a scoop of ice cream later on in the evening. Total Price per meal; Veggies were free from my brothers gardens. Pieces of beef were left over from last nights dinner- 58 cents per serving, Crusty bread was left from New Years- 4 cents a piece Peaches were free- my sis bought me a bushel when they were in season that I did up Brownie Mix- 69 cents a box at Aldi's grocery store-25 cents a serving. Walnuts- a handful- 30 cents A scoop of ice cream is about 28 cents per scoop of Aldi vanilla ice cream on sale. All in all this meal cost about $ 1.20 cents per person. I also froze half of the brownies and some soup that was leftover for another two meals. When I don't have much meat left I love to make a good soup and bulk it up with veggies and pasta/barleys/or rice. For my beef I usually make it with barley and I always make extra to freeze for saturday afternoons or sunday evenings or anytime I don't feel like cooking. I also try to nutritionally balance at least one meal a day besides Mr. Reci's lunch which I load with carrot sticks and celery plus fresh fruit besides his standard peanut butter and jelly sandwiches. He loves oatmeal for breakfast and I make him home made brownsugar and maple oatmeal and some juice for breakfast. He is not hard to please when it comes to eating.
  10. Keiser means that its a crusty roll with a soft center Lowie when referring to the term Keiser in baking. I love rolls that have the hard crust on the outside. I asked my cousin at the bakery why the bakery rolls of today are soft on the outside and he said prerservatives which make the rolls last longer on store shelves are used in their baking today. Lowie you haven't had a good hard roll until you have gone to an old fashioned bakery that bakes its bread and rolls in brick ovens. The best way to eat one ( and you just can't eat one) is to get it right from the brick bakery oven all hot and fresh and break it open with your hands and smother the inside with homemade sweetcreme butter and eat it while the roll is still hot. I know people tell you not to eat hot rolls or bread but I have been doing it all these years and it never hurt me.
  11. Lowie both sets of my grandparents are from Italy. My maternal grandparents are from the Naples, Avellino Italy towns and my fraternal grandparents are from Northern Italy, Modena and Milano. Both sides of grandmothers always had lots of fruits and vegetables at their dinner tables and some cheeses and small dishes of pasta. In Italy alot of dining contains fruits and veggie instead of all the starchy pastas. Sometimes I do the veggie lasagna like you Lowie. With the surgery my stomach ( whats left of it) can't handle alot of meat. I love to make an eggplant lasagna with lots of veggies, cheese and a marinara sauce. The eggplant takes the place of the pasta. I don't flour or fry my eggplant either and the dish comes out very nice. Mare this lasagna is very thick and very rich. After it stands for 20 minutes it comes out firm from the pan. I usually have the side bowl of sauce for all the sauce lovers to use on their pieces to make them a little more moist.

  18. Melt-in-your mouth spicy carrot cake recipe 1/3 c water hot to boiling 2 c finely shredded carrots 2 c flour, use an all purpose flour 1 1/4 c sugar 1 1/2 tsp baking soda 1 tsp salt 1 1/2 tsp ground cinnamon 1 1/2 tsp ground cloves 1 1/2 tsp ground nutmeg 1/2 c vegetable oil 3 eggs 1 1/2 tsp vanilla 1 1/2 c finely chopped nuts. frosting of your choice, a lemon cream cheese frosting, or vanilla cream cheese frosting is really good. Pour the water on the carrots in large to medium mixing bowl, heat your oven to 350 and grease and flour your cake pan. Use a standard cake pan 13x9. Mix the remaining ingredients in with the carrots and beat on low speed, working the sides of the bowl frequently for 2 minutes, then beat on medium speed for another minute and pour into the pan. Bounce pan on the counter to remove air bubbles. Bake 45 to 50 minutes or until a tooth pick comes out clean when stuck in the center of the cake. Take out and let cool before frosting. Remember finely shredded carrots. I just triple or quad this recipe for a sheet cake.
  19. This is one of the recipes my Cousins have used for generations at their bakery. On Sundays after church we always go and get a dozen rolls and some Italian Bread to have with our meals. I love the smell of the bread and rolls baking especially when I make them. The house has a nice comfy smell to it. The Recipe 3/4 cup milk 3/4 cup water 1/2 cup white sugar 1 teaspoon salt 2 eggs 5 teaspoons active dry yeast 5 cups all-purpose flour 1/2 cup margarine, melted Directions 1 In a medium saucepan over medium heat, warm milk, water, sugar and salt. Remove from heat, and mix in the eggs and yeast. 2 Measure flour into a large bowl. Make a well in the flour, and pour milk mixture into it. Do not stir. Cover with a lid, and let stand for 20 to 30 minutes. 3 Pour melted margarine into flour, and mix well. Add more flour if too sticky. Knead lightly. Cover, and let rise for 20 to 30 minutes. 4 Shape the dough into rolls, and place on a baking sheet. Let rise again for 20 to 30 minutes. 5 Bake rolls in a preheated 400 degrees F (205 degrees C) oven for 15 minutes, or until done. I put poppy and sesame seeds on the tops of my rolls before I bake them.
  20. First off I take Hot and Sweet Italian Sausage and lots of garlic chucks, cut them in pieces and fry them in a tsp of olive oil. While they are cooking I par boil 2 boxes of P and R Lasagna Noodles. I use the boxed because its easier and less time consuming than making my own. While these items are cooking I take 1 pound of ground chuck and 1 lb of ground veal and combine them in a bowl with 1 cup of plain bread crumbs, Fresh Parsley, Fresh Garlic crushed, Salt and Pepper and 1/3 cup of Parmesan Grated Cheese. I mix all of these ingredience together and make meat balls. When the sausage is browned I remove them from the frying pan to another bowl and put the meatballs in the skillet to brown on all sides keeping in the juices of the meat and spices. Next I take a large container of Ricotta Cheese and empty it into a large bowl. I add one cup of milk, 2 eggs and fresh parsley and mix all together until creamy. Putting the Lasagna together: 1 layer of noodles on the bottom. next add a generous helping of ricotta cheese mixture next add portions of meatballs and sausage next add generous portions of mozzarella cheese over the meat, next add sprinkles of Romano and Parmesan Cheese. Keep adding these layers until all of your fillings are gone. For the top of the lasagna add the last layer of noodles and then take a helping of tomato sauce and spread over the top of the lasagna and down the sides. Add mozzarella all over the top of the lasagna and then sprinkle parmesan and romano cheese. I bake this in the oven at 350 degrees for about 1 hour. I let it cool for 20 minutes then I serve it with home made garlic bread and a nice green salad. I also serve sauce on the side for those who enjoy their lasagna with more sauce. In Italy my grandmother was taught by her mother to put hard boiled eggs in the lasagna. Most Pastas in Italy have very little sauce on them. A few tablespoons is adequate. I have become americanized in my distribution of sauce on pastas because mr. reci loves sauce. I only use a little.
  21. This is usually an extension of a summer meal when we barbeque on the grill. Its a favorite of ours and a bit different from just plain Boston Baked Beans. Calico Beans 1 lb.
